Their business constantly increased, and the brothers granted large loans to Charles V, who in 1532 made Bartholomeus a nobleman of the empire, and gave him in 1541 a general safe- conduct and in 1546 the privilege of exemption from some local courts.
By treaty dated 27 May, 1528 the Welsers, through their agents, Ehinger and Sailer, received from the Spanish Crown the rights of supremacy in Venezuela; they monopolized the import and export trade of the country, and established a colonizing scheme there.
Although the province was regarded as their property until 1551, it was taken from the Welsers by legal decision in 1556 and went to the Spanish Crown.

 Galileo's letters to Mark Welser
Here, Galileo says (my translation): “For about eighteen months, I have been watching with the telescope some fairly dark spots in the body of the Sun, when it was near its setting ….” My Italian isn't great, but there's no ambiguity about his phrase “… quando era vicino al suo tramontare …”.
Here he only mentions observing near sunset; and, taken with the sunset observations mentioned in the first letter to Welser, I think this is fair evidence that Galileo only observed the Sun directly near sunset.
For comparison, June is “fog season” in San Diego; the local weatherpeople on TV refer to “June gloom.”) So, switching from direct observation to projection immediately allowed Galileo to follow the motion of the spots across the Sun in detail, day by day.
