The main part of English Bicknor was compact and regular in shape with its north boundary following the course of the Wye from Lydbrook in the north-east downstream to Coldwell, where the river turns north describing a large loop to pass the promontory called Symonds Yat rock.
West of English Bicknor village the principal house in the mid 16th century was Bicknor Court.
An estate of ½ hide in English Bicknor was held by Morganwy in 1066 and by William son of Norman in 1086.

"WELSH BICKNOR, a parish in the lower division of the hundred of Skenfreth, in the county of Hereford, 8 miles to the N.E. of Monmouth.
It is situated on the river Wye, which surrounds it on three sides, and once formed part of the Marches.
Until recently it was included in the county of Monmouth, and is still designated Welsh, to distinguish it from English Bickner, which lies opposite to it.

Welsh Bicknor (Welsh: Llangystennin Garth Brenni) is a former detached parish (exclave) of Monmouthshire now located within Herefordshire.
The manor house and surrounding land of Welsh Bicknor were seized from Richard Vaughan in 1651 because he was a Catholic and given to Phillip Nicholas of Llansoy, in Monmouthshire.
Welsh Bicknor was restored to Herefordshire in 1844 by an Act of Parliament.

Monmouthshire (Welsh: Sir Fynwy) is a county in south-east Wales.
The county also once included the exclave of Welsh Bicknor, locally situated a short distance east of Monmouthshire's east border, sandwiched between the borders of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, but this was transferred to Herefordshire in the 1840s.
Monmouthshire's Welsh status was unclear until 1974 when the area (as Gwent) was specifically incorporated into Wales as part of a local government reform.

 English Bicknor - Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
English Bicknor is one of the ancient villages of the Forest of Dean, situated at the top of a hill overlooking the Wye Valley, and once the site of an ancient motte and bailey castle, the remnants of which can still be seen.
A typical early Norman defence work which is one of many along the Welsh border, it is thought to have been built in the reign of Henry 1 (1100 - 1135) or Stephen (1135 - 54) and was demolished or destroyed by the late 14th Century, but why and how is not known.
English Bicknor Church of England Primary School The local secondary school is Lakers at Berry Hill.

Sir John de Montacute, her son, doing homage, had livery of all her lands; among which was the manor of Welsh Bicknor.
It appears from a pedigree in the Heralds' office, that in the reign of Elizabeth, John Vaughan, of Clifford Park, in the county of Hereford, was lord of Welsh Bicknor.
He married Anne, daughter of John Powell, of Perthir, and left one son, Richard, who died in 1697, aged 96, and who prevented the extinction of the family, by taking a second wife, at the advanced age of 75; of which event a singular anecdote is related in the family.

 Hereford Cathedral History Part 1: Celtic & Saxon Times
The existence of this little known King of Ergyng, the early British Kingdom that encompassed most of Herefordshire long before the arrival of the Saxons, is briefly recorded in the Life of his son, St. Mewen.
His Welsh name was probably Gwrgan, as used some generations later in the Ergyng dynasty.
A later Bishop, possibly Elwystl or Ufelfyw, was supposedly one of the prelates present at the conferences held between St. Augustine of Canterbury and the Welsh Ecclesiastical hierarchy in AD 602 & 4.

Perched on a willow is a cormorant, reminder that the sea is not far away; the Wye was a 'road' long before the Romans forced the Welsh behind its wide barrier.
Three miles of slippery jogging past the Youth Hostel at Welsh Bicknor (firmly in England now) with the constant river murmur leads round the bottom of the great loop, where the railway pops out of a tunnel to share its bridge over the Wye with walkers.
By now a sweet inland murmur was telling me I was late, so back at Welsh Bicknor YH I cut across rough land to find a path over by Coppett Hill to shortcut the loop in the river.

The final few miles to the Youth Hostel incorporated more then just a few hills, and I had a feeling that it was just about the worse few miles so far for Shaun and his wounded knee.
Welsh Bicknor youth hostel is definitely a place I would go back to.
Its a former Victorian rectory with 25 acres of beautiful wooded surroundings situated by the river Wye, and I reckon its ideal for exploring the Wye valley and the forest of Dean.

Also, it must be noted that the manor of Ruardean was owned by a Vaughan family in the 17th century and it had passed to another Vaughan family (Courtfield, Welsh Bicknor) by the 18th century, but after extensive researches I have been unable to show a link with those branches of Vaughans.
In 1851 Absolom (1820) was a farmer of 30 acres at Smithway Farm, Ruardean, (map, left) with his sister Hannah Vaughan as housekeeper.
Elizabeth was the daughter of William (a collier) and Sarah Cooper of Lydbrook, an industrialised hamlet within English Bicknor parish, where iron and tin "said to be the first in the kingdom" (Lewis's Topographical Dictionary, 1840) were worked.

She married (confusingly) into another branch of Vaughans, those of Courtfield (Welsh Bicknor) inheriting Ruardean and Clyro on John's death in 1694.
It seems that they adopted the Arms of the Clyro/Kinnersley Vaughans from this female connection (contrary to heraldic practice), and also perpetuated the Baynham name from that connection into the 20th century.
But of Mary Vaughan, who brought the Ruardean inheritance to Courtfield, there is now no trace: her headstone, removed with others from the church at Welsh Bicknor during rebuilding works in 1858 to the crypt of the chapel at Courtfield, has since vanished.

 Cycling - End2End (pt1)
Day 4 proved to be one of the hottest and sunniest days of the whole journey and had some great scenery along the way.
The final stage of the journey turned out to be a rather strenuous climb up one hill followed by a rather intimidating ride down the other side until eventually (after going down a very steep driveway) I reached the hostel.
I began the day thankful that I didn't have to go back up the drive to the road as instead I could take a footpath that led across the river and to a road on the other side.

It has been deemed to be part of Herefordshire since the Counties (Detached Parts) Act 1844.
