Welsh Cup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Welsh Cup is a knock-out football competition contested annually by teams from Wales and neighbouring parts of England.
Only Welsh teams (since the mid-1990s, only teams in the League of Wales) can progress to the UEFA Cup through winning the Welsh Cup.
The Football Association of Wales is the organising body of this competition, which has been run (except for the world wars) every year since the creation of the FAW in 1876.

It is a 'Knockout’ Cup Competition, with matches up to the quarter finals arranged in four geographical zones and in the WCA Welsh Cup Competition there will be an open draw after the Zone Finals.
Entry to the Cup Competition is open to all clubs who have paid their affiliation fees for that year, and affiliation fees must be paid before a club plays its first match in the competition.
Any player who is banned by his or her League is not eligible to play in the WCA Welsh Cricket Cup Competition providing that the disciplinary procedures including the right of appeal as laid down in clauses 18.20 of the WCA Constitution have been strictly applied.

 1998 Welsh Cup
City’s Welsh Cup run got off to a flying start on a hot October afternoon in Welshpool, where the travelling fans were treated to a seven goal blitz by City, with Cup hero Kenny MacKenna scoring a hat-trick.
It certainly wasn’t what the Welsh media had hoped for, as the bookmakers expected an attractive Barry v Newtown final as opposed to two teams with the worst disciplinary records in the League for that season.
Six days previous to the Welsh Cup Final, City had entertained Barry Town in the Final of the Gilbert League Cup, which, after the toss of a coin, was played at Farrar Road.

 CNNSI.com - Soccer - UEFA's Welsh denial sends Old Firm message - Wednesday October 10, 2001 12:25 PM
Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham were frequent participants in the old European Cup Winners' Cup through the Welsh Cup, but that route was closed off to them after they opted to continue in the English League rather than join the League of Wales when it was established in the 1990s.
Wrexham have won the Welsh Cup 23 times, Cardiff 21 times and Swansea nine times and as a result, all enjoyed a number of European campaigns in the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup between the early-1960s and the mid-1990s.
Cardiff reached the semifinals of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1968 and in all had 15 seasons in Europe, the last in 1993-94.

Reaching the semi-final stage of the Welsh Cup the previous season gave non-League Bangor City, then in the Cheshire League, the advantage of being exempted until the 5th Round of 1961-62’s competition.
The Welsh media looked upon the return leg at Farrar Road as merely a formality, but it turned out to be a different matter altogether.
Under Welsh Football Association rules at the time, both sides had collected two points for their wins, so a playoff had to be held at the Belle Vue Stadium, Rhyl.

CNN/SI - Rugby Union - Fears over Welsh World Cup organization dismissed - Wednesday July 22, 1998 02:31 PM
Posted: Wednesday July 22, 1998 02:31 PM CARDIFF, Wales (Reuters) -- Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) chief Glanmor Griffiths denied suggestions Wednesday that Wales' hosting of the 1999 World Cup was under threat.
A leaked memo to the WRU from Rugby World Cup chairman Leo Williams had questioned ticketing and security arrangements and raised concerns over whether the new 120 million pounds (US$196.9 million) Millennium Stadium in Cardiff would be ready on time.
The WRU initially had a court injunction served on the media to prevent them revealing the details of the leaked memo, but that was lifted by a judge Tuesday.
