League of Wales - Gurupedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
In the early 1990s UEFA insisted that clubs should not play in a "foreign" league (and arguments about the United Kingdom being one country do not wash with UEFA because all four countries participate in international competition in their own right), thus came about the creation of the League of Wales.
Many of the northern clubs refused to participate in the new league initially, and for a time played their "home" English league games in exile at grounds to the east of the English border.
Cardiff City, Wrexham, and Swansea City, remains an anomaly in the eyes of UEFA, ameliorated only by their being debarred from competing for the Welsh Cup which used to provide one of them with near-guaranteed European competition each year.

Back to the topic I agree there HAS to be a Northern Semi Pro premiership side fed by a Several Northern leagues which are elavated above div 4 standard, we have to give the North a chance to prosper otherwise its just a wasted opportunity.
It is of paramount importance that the channel is kept open for successful North Wales teams to progress through the divisions to the Welsh Premiership. If a club feels that it is not practical or desirable to play in a higher division then it is for that individual club to decline the offer of promotion.
The WRU has decided on certain criteria that clubs need to fulfil before gaining admission to the premiership such as a minimum capacity.Ambitious clubs who have a realistic chance of achieving premiership status will and should meet this criteria whether they are from the North or South.
