"League" football in England is organised into four divisions, the foremost being the FA Premier League, the remaining three remaining under the jurisdiction of what is legally known as simply The Football League.
The League-wide League Cup, and the FA Cup that is dominated by League teams, use a single-elimination format to determine a champion.
Professional football teams from Wales (Cardiff City, Wrexham, and Swansea City) play in the English Football League, thus largely disqualifying themselves from the UEFA club competitions, although lower teams play in the League of Wales.

The League of Wales (also known as the Vauxhall Masterfit Retailers Welsh Premier League for sponsorship reasons) is the national football league for Wales and is at the top of the Welsh football league system.
The league suffers from the fact that six of the largest football clubs in Wales — Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham, Newport County, Methyr Tydfil and Colwyn Bay — all play in the English football league system.
The League normally provides three teams for European club competitions (though they invariably do not progress far) -- the League Champions are entered in the UEFA Champions League, the runners-up in the UEFA Cup, and the third place team in the Intertoto Cup.

At the beginning of the 1934-35 season senior football in the North Wales coast area was covered by two senior Leagues – the North Wales Coast League and the Welsh League, largely along geographic lines.
These leagues were criticised by Col. Williams as lacking in vision and the Bangor and District League, who had decided to run independently was told in no uncertain terms to toe the line or not to be allowed to function at all.
And it would appear that the Welsh League was to be, as described by Mr J Lloyd Kearns (Denbigh) at the League’s AGM in Rhyl on July 13th, “washed away”.
