The quarry opened in the 19th century but was vastly expanded during the second World War to provide aggregate for the runways of Lincolnshire's airfields.
The lowest, the Welton Till, is a grey coloured chalky till with mostly locally derived fragments.
Meanwhile it is thought that the gravels may have an age in excess of 400000 years, making them of similar age to the Swanscombe and Boxgrove hominid sites, far and away the oldest traces of man north of the Thames.

 The Variegated Beds of the Welton Chalk Formation
At each, the exposures are very weathered, often producing scree of shaley debris, and before examination have to be carefully 'freshened' and prepared for study by clearing away loose material, firstly by digging out with spade and trowel, then by using handbrush and or toothbrush.
Wood and Mortimore (1995) have interpreted this anomaly as evidence for a basin and swell sedimentary topography in the Chalk of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
Although there is much variance in the thickness of the Variegated Beds sequence in North Lincolnshire and in individual lithological units, even in exposures within the same quarry, evidence appears to be available for the recognition of certain patterns.

The turbines are used to harness the energy of the wind to channel it into electricity.

As a guest to welton golf course i found it not only a nice challenge but a very neat and tidy course.The fairways are quite forgiving.
I have been a member at welton for the past 5 years and have enjoyed my golf there in that time.

In the late 19th century, sand and gravel extraction was started in a former river valley on the northeastern limit of the small village of Welton-le-Wold, located in the chalk Wolds of Lincolnshire.
Whilst the quarry was operational, exposed faces revealed a sequence of up to 13m of three distinctive tills overlying some 10m of sands and gravels.
To re-assess and re-examine the upper and lower sequence of the Welton Beck Member gravels with modern geological techniques.

The type-section of the Deepdale Flint and Marls of the Welton Chalk (Turonian - Terebratulina lata zone) was the next stop on the itinerary (TA 045182).
The lowest beds of the Welton Chalk show a distinctive change in lithology consisting of 50cm of variegated claystone, siltstone and marl.
