 INTERVIEW WITH WELWYN WILTON KATZ
It was intriguing to learn that Katz had no intention of writing an Arthurian novel when she started; she only discovered that this was what it was really about in the second half of the story.
WWK: Oh yes, she was always Canadian; I always thought of her that way.
WWK: I never thought of The Third Magic as a children's book, but my publishers, who had published me before, are children's publishers and they have established a network for marketing books for children.

Welwyn Katz's Come Like Shadows is the story of sixteen-year-old Kinny O'Neil who things she's landed the job of a lifetime as the assistant to the director of Shakespeare's Macbeth at the famed Stratford Festival.
Welwyn Katz has a good talent for plots of a type that no one would have thought of, such as in modern Arthurian "The Third Magic." Here, attention is swerved toward Macbeth, the evil witches of legend, and a modern-day Shakespearan production.
Katz weaves a spellbinding aura around the book, such as the opening chapter and the scenes where Macbeth can be glimpsed in the mirror -- and the climax, of course.

Review of Welwyn Wilton Katz's Come Like Shadows
Katz chooses to begin the book with an account of the last few hours of Macbeth's life, and Macbeth's encounter with the three witches.
Katz seems to be writing some sort of cautionary tale about wishing too hard for success, but even at that level, Kinny and Lucas were too level-headed for the story to succeed as a warning about their foolishness.
Furthermore, Katz has fashioned a rather mean-spirited end for Strachan, which I felt was over-punishment for her deeds (mainly, a weird idea for the setting of a Shakespearean history play).

Katz (Whalesinger) combines fantasy, science fiction and ecological issues in this appealing tale of time travel, set in the 21st century with excursions to the year 1993.
Katz, while dwelling a bit lengthily on the process enabling time-tripping, draws stimulating comparisons between the "past" and the girls' own era (Sara and Dani have never seen a real horse, only an image on the "televid"; they marvel over the long-ago custom of women changing their names upon marriage).
Katz tells an absorbing story while delivering a serious ecological message.?Susan L. Rogers, Chestnut Hill Academy, PA Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Welwyn Wilton Katz recounts this legend from the point of view of Wiglaf, Beowulf's young kinsman who was present at his last battle with the dragon.
He has done extensive research into other versions of the Beowulf story,(including a favorite of mine by Rosemary Sutcliff.) Katz makes this a "human" and tender tale beneath all the fierce and terrible battles.

Katz conjures up a ridiculously evil power that is supposed to inhabit the false face mask and alter the personalities of characters who attempt to possess the mask.
False face masks are an integral part of traditional Iroquois religion practised today on the very reserve that Katz describes so well.
Her description of the mask as an absolute evil amounts to religious intolerance and goes far in fostering the conception of native, non-Christian religions as savage pagan rituals.

Over and under this she weaves a complex pattern of science, personalities, a lost treasure, and a whale mother with an ailing baby.
