Before long, the coast around Wemyss Bay to Wemyss Point became home to large villas that, in turn, were home to the likes of the Chairman of Cunard, and to James "Paraffin" Young, who made his fortune developing the oil shale industry in West Lothian.

 Wemyss Bay
Popular belief is that Wemyss Bay (pronounced 'Weems') was named after one Bob Wemyss, who owned a single hut on the shore some 200 years ago.
The town's heyday came in the Victorian era, when the spectacular glass and wrought-iron canopy of the station welcomed generations of Glaswegians to the railway terminus and signalled the start of the steamer trip 'doon the watter'.
The station survives today, and a ferry service operates from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.

We met as a house church and had a small group of people who were very dedicated and devoted in their service to God.

Wemyss Bay lies on the Firth of Clyde.
Wemyss Bay station, above, was built in 1903, to accommodate the large number of holidaymakers travelling from Glasgow to Rothesay.
The train arrived at Wemyss Bay at the end of its tour of Western Scotland at lunch time.

Incorporated in 1862, the company was established to provide steamer connections from Wemyss Bay for the Greenock and Wemyss Bay Railway Company which was about to open services to the coastal village.
PS Victory was bought from Captain Duncan Stewart and the replacement for the steamer sold to America, PS Bute, arrived from her builders shortly afterwards.
Largs, Victory and Argyle were bought by James Gillies and Alexander Campbell, owners of PS Venus, and were used in connection with the Wemyss Bay railway until the coming of the Caledonian Steam Packet Company.

 Clyde Steamers
Undoubtedly one of Britain's finest architectural gems, Wemyss Bay's railway station and pier complex was opened officially on Monday, December 7, 1903.
The original single-track line from Port Glasgow to Wemyss Bay opened on Monday, May 15, 1865 and it was built essentially both as an extension to the 1841 Glasgow to Greenock Railway and as part of a plan to build a line from Greenock to Largs.
Double track was laid along the line from Port Glasgow to Upper Greenock and from Dunrod to Wemyss Bay in 1903 and, with land reclaimed from the shore and a new sea wall, Wemyss Bay's station and pier termini completely rebuilt on the site of its predecessor.
