Wen studied geology at the undergraduate and graduate levels from 1960 to 1968 in Beijing, and joined the Party while a student in 1965.
Wen’s rise was in part due to his association with reform-minded leaders, Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang, but he has apparently avoided trouble in the wake of their downfalls in the late 1980s.
