Wen's painting, "Old Trees By a Wintery Brook," appears at first to be a depiction of nature -- but it is clearly not.
By renouncing any attempt whatever at focusing on the objects of the painting, and instead foregrounding the medium and the technique, Wen Zheng-ming has produced a work that is remarkably "modern," even as in its brushwork and the motifs of nature it selects it seems to fit easily into established literati tradition.
Wen's work expresses perfectly the central theme of thousands of literati paintings -- painting was a medium that, in Confucian manner, borrowed tradition in order to perfect self-expression and communication.

The greatest of all the Ming Wu School artists was Shen Zhou’s pupil Wen Zhengming (1470 –1559).
One of Wen’s masterpieces is the handscroll entitled, The Seven Junipers, a topographical handscroll depicting seven gnarled trees planted in the year 500 A.D. on the grounds of the Zhidao Guan, a Daoist temple in Changshu, Jiangsu province.
In addition to forming an outdoor altar, the trees were traditionally likened to dragons and immortals, a connection suggested by the contorted shapes of the ancient trees’ trunks and branches, and fully articulated in the poem inscribed by the artist at the end of the scroll.

The nature of gifts, patronage, friendship, family, and political ties are some of the themes that Clunas explores as he recounts the evidence found in Wen's letters to his son and other primary sources.
The volume, which is beautifully illustrated with color and b&w plates, contains a bibliography and an index of Chinese names, but no subject index.
