Wendake is the current name for the Huron-Wendat reserve, an enclave within Quebec City, Quebec.
The Huron-Wendat of Wendake (formerly called the Hurons of Lorette) originally came from the Georgian Bay region.
Wendake was also the name given by Hurons to this original Ontario homeland south of Georgian Bay in Simcoe County and Grey County, a region also informally known as "Huronia" or the Georgian Triangle.

The first missionary to arrive in Wendake was Joseph Le Caron who spent the winter of 1615 - 1616 in the Attignawantan village of Carhagouha.
Demographic information is imprecise but it appears that the population of Wendake was reduced by one half to two thirds between 1615 and 1641.
As Wendake crumbled, many Wendat looked to the Jesuits for help but the benefits the Jesuits offered were waiting in heaven.

Wendake was blessed with many lakes and rivers on which to fish.

Their eight (later nine) villages were nestled along the base of the Niagara Escarpment, an ancient ridge that runs from Niagara Falls, around the western end of Lake Ontario to modern day Collingwood, continuing on to the Bruce Peninsula, across the straits to Manitoulin Island and into the state of Michigan.
The area apparently enjoyed a slightly milder climate from that of Wendake as the Tionontatehronnon were able to grow Tobacco.
The final Iroquois assaults on Wendake in 1649 brought a flood of refugees to the villages of the Tionontatehronnon.

Located along the shores of Georgian Bay -Samuel de Champlain's "mer douce"-- and surrounded by wooded hillsides, this was the ancestral homeland of the Wendat nation, a branch of the Iroquoian family.
Within Wendake, there were an estimated 330 kilometres of trails linking the four tribes of the Huron Nation and all the villages together.
It is estimated that the beaver population was exhausted in Wendake by the 1630's.

Over the last four years, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada invested $4.6 million to complete the revitalization of Old Wendake, a tourist destination near Quebec City, and $1.3 million to help rebuild the Wendake school.
The $4.6 million announced today will further develop tourism facilities in Old Wendake, help to promote and preserve the cultural heritage of the Huron-Wendat Nation, and will also replace water and wastewater infrastructure.

Rectification of certain facts concerning Wendaké and the letter that was sent to Ishgooda.
When I brought up the question of the webpage here in Wendaké, some people had seen it and I was told that a court order had been sent concerning the honourary title of the former Grand Chief.
We asked the court for an injunction to stop the members of the band council from signing an agreement in principle on the autonomy of the Wendat Nation of Wendaké, such agreement to become in force with only a resolution carried by the band council.

The Quarante Arpent was sold illegally (without a referendum) by the band council chief and by the government of Canada in 1904.
Ten years ago, some traditional people were successful in being elected to the band council of chiefs and they then claimed 3 pieces of land taken away from us in the past years.
It irritates me that there are always people crying "foul" when it comes to the negotiations that have been undertaken on behalf of the Huron Nation by the Council who generally try to take in the concerns of the majority.

At first I was against attending the event, and voiced my feelings to the business council, citing the concerns of one of our brothers in Wendake that the ceremony would be used to promote tourism, and wasn't really being developed to better brotherhood among our people.
We were given apologies for pain and conflict by the Wyandottes of Oklahoma, Wyandottes of Anderdon Michigan and the Huron Wendat in Wendake.
I also apologized to the Anderdon Wyandottes and the Huron Wendat of Wendake for not having pursued communication and fostering the spirit of brotherhood as would have been right.
