Wendigo makes it clear that George and Kim -- who are so "civilized" compared to the local hunting families, who drink wine instead of beer and eat pasta instead of venison, who never see trees except in Central Park -- still know best how to treat their environment, whatever environment that may be.
If Wendigo was supposed to be a rumination on the conflict between the civilized and the wild, it surely could have been more complex than this clash between enlightened urbanites and backwoods hicks.

It's no small coincidence that the original poster art for "Wendigo" looks exactly the same as the poster art for "The Blair Witch Project" (a low-angle shot of a scared-looking face backed by trees) since the film is clearly marketed at the same audience that made that supernatural horror film from 1999 a runaway hit.
"Wendigo" (pronounced "Wendy-go," and not to be confused with the cheesy 1996 horror flick "Frostbiter: Wrath of the Wendigo") is similar to "The Blair Witch Project" in a number of ways with the main difference being it's actually quite good.
And outside, in the backwoods, Fessenden brings his "Wendigo" to life with considerable ingenuity and restraint, allowing the fear to build through glimpses and trickery, as branches, tree limbs, and deer carcasses take on both frightening and surreal proportions.

 Wendigo (2002): Reviews
Until it goes off the rails in its final 10 or 15 minutes, Wendigo, Larry Fessenden's spooky new thriller, is a refreshingly smart and newfangled variation on several themes derived from far less sophisticated and knowing horror films.
Though Wendigo has weak spots, including an ending that is not as satisfying as it might be, the film remains memorable despite its flaws.
The real downfall of the movie had to be, in rough order: 1 The confused script, alternately preachy, condescending, and inarticulate on the supposedly central matter of myth, nature and spirituality; 2 The characterizations, stereotyped beyond parody (whiney, "intellectual" city dwellers versus Deliverance-style locals).
