The Wendigo is a fictional character in Marvel comics that is based on the mythical creature of the same name.
The tips of the Wendigo's fingers and toes are tipped with razor sharp, retractable claws that are capable of piercing through most conventional materials, even steel, due to a combination of the sharpness of the claws and the Wendigo's massive physical strength.
Even though the Wendigo was once a human being, very little is left of that person with the exception of brief and rare instances during which the Wendigo is able to remember things about its former life.

Universe X: Beasts Review - Silver Bullet Comics
Universe X could possibly be a work of genius were it not for the fact that the series itself falls too hard for format and shoehorning half of Marvel continuity into every issue.
Not only due to the Wendigo, who as we will learn later in the tale was actually Jamie Madrox after having eaten one of his duplicates, but also due to T'Challa's meddling with the Cosmic Cube, even though not actively touching the cube, still activating it through thought and prayer.
It is a brave feat for comics creators to challenge theological basis in such a fashion and one that needs to be recognized by the readers.

As far as fiction goes, the most famous windigo story is Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo"; it is one of the wraith stories, and is hands down the most imitated (Derleth's stories of Ithaqua in the Cthulhu Mythos are perhaps the most famous Blackwood inspirations).
The Blackwood story ended up in a television show in the 1960s, and was in a comic in the 1940's.
Shadowrun makes windigowak out to be vampiric orcs (eukkk!)...White Wolf does something unusual by making a Wendigo clan (tho' in a way they had made windigowak a separate race), and Dark Conspiracy does the finest job of the RPGs that has attempted to do a windigo IMO.
