THE ANNOUNCEMENT by Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam, (UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador), that she is to become an unwed mother has sent shock waves through the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Fitzwilliam made her announcement at the Corpus Christi College, a private all-girls institution.
Fitzwilliam gained fame in 1998 when she became the second Trinidadian to win the Miss Universe title the first being Janelle Penny Commissioning in 1977.

Fitzwilliam's regal air and perfect presentations won her the honor of being the second Trinidadian (and third fl woman) to hold the Miss Universe title, but during the telecast her halting final answer led to the jury deadlocking between her and Veruska Ramirez of Venezuela.
It was reported in May that Wendy gave birth to a son in the United States by many media houses in Trinidad and Tobago, this was later confirmed by her mother, Juditha Fitzwilliam.

In the wake of the announcement, Fitzwilliam has been criticised, mainly because of her out of wedlock pregnancy, especially since she is seen as a role model to the country’s youths.
