Dame Wendy Hiller, one of Britain's most distinguished actresses of screen and stage and whose career highlights include being George Bernard Shaw's favorite leading lady, and an Oscar winner for her performance as a lonely spinster in Separate Tables (1958), died at her home in Beaconsfield, England, on May 14.
Wendy Hiller was born on August 15, 1912, in Bramhall, and raised in Manchester, where her father was a cotton-cloth manufacturer.
The ensuing years could very well have been Hiller's time for screen stardom, yet despite her blazing acting ability, regal presence and distinctive voice, her film forays were too few, as she concentrated on the stage and spending time with her husband Gow and two children.

 The History of Wendy
Personally, if Wendy is derived from a Welsh name, my candidate would be Gwendydd (pronounced Gwen-deethe, "white day"), which was the name of Myrddin (Merlin)'s sister (as in the poem Ymddiddan Myrddin a Gwendydd ei Chwaer, the Conversation of Merlin and Gwendydd his Sister).
The magazine Family History also states that Wendy, along with the names Marian and Shirley were once boys names, and that in 1797 a boy named Wendy was apprenticed to some one in Glos.
In the 1940s, the variation "Wendie" was regularly used and "Wendi" appeared in the 1960s, which is when the name reached its peak in Britain.

At a glance there is very little to connect the young Hiller of Love on the Dole and the Shaw plays with the grande dame familiar to spectators of later years.

 MMI Tribute: Wendy Hiller
One burst onto the international scene in 1938 like a rare wildflower in full bloom, winning an Academy Award nomination for her first major role: Eliza Doolittle in "Pygmalion." Her name was Wendy Hiller and her vibrant personality outshone her shifting speech patterns and her many costume changes.
A long and glorious career seemed to beckon Wendy Hiller, and it did, although not in the way movie moguls anticipated.
As in her youth, Hiller played little old ladies with strength and conviction, and she gave a ferocious intelligence to the part of the elderly headmistress, clinging like a tiger to the independence of her life and the accuracy of her perceptions.
