Although some of the better-known Darwin Award recipients have proven to be fictitious, such as the JATO Rocket Car, the exploits of the majority of Award winners have been independently verified from original source material.
The whole process is overseen by the project's creator, Wendy Northcutt, a.k.a.
Northcutt began collecting the stories in 1993 when she was studying at Stanford University.

Wendy Northcutt:  The Darwin Awards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Northcutt prefaces each chapter with a short discussion of evolution or the philosophy of the Darwin Awards concerning the specific topic.
Northcutt never loses sight of the fact that the stories are funny and she never takes herself or the awards too seriously.
She acknowledges that the humor of the awards, either on a specific level or a general level, will not appeal to everyone and suggests that skipping offensive stories or sections be done as the reader sees fit.

Salon.com Books | "The Darwin Awards"
Wendy Northcutt, a University of California at Berkeley-educated molecular biologist, has gathered almost 200 stories of deadly human folly for her new book, "The Darwin Awards." As Northcutt quotes a Stephen Wright aphorism, "The problem with the gene pool is, there's no lifeguard."
Because Northcutt felt his death was merely a lapse of judgment, John-John was spared a Darwin.
(Northcutt advises readers not to read the book in one sitting; I think this may be why.) Take the story of Andrew, who, while fighting with his young son over a missing container of chocolate cake icing, thrust a knife into the kid's hand and challenged him to take a stab.

Amazon.co.uk: The Darwin Awards: 180 Bizarre True Stories of How Dumb Humans Have Met Their Maker: Books   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Started in 1993 by biologist Wendy Northcutt she set out to collect together and authenticate stories of individuals around the world who, through their stupidity, have removed themselves from the gene pool.
Northcutt uses many witty quotes to emphasize this point, and establishes the mood well.
To win the Darwin Award, you must (1) die or be unable to procreate, (2) show really bad judgment, (3) cause your own downfall, (4) have the ability to use sound judgment (are not permanently mentally impaired) and (5) have the incident verified by someone else.

Splendid: Departments: Bookshelf: The Darwin Awards 3: Survival of the Fittest
The Darwin Awards archive was launched online in 1994 by Wendy Northcutt while she waited for her experiments at a neuroscience research laboratory at Stanford to run their course; it moved to its own domain in 1997.
The most important, of course, is that the nominated individual must have removed themselves from the gene pool in a "spectacularly stupid manner." This eliminates truly accidental deaths and all suicide attempts.
And keep Northcutt's wise admonition in mind: if you yourself are not willing to be nominated for an award, you probably shouldn't read this book.

Bookreporter.com - THE DARWIN AWARDS III by Wendy Northcutt
Northcutt, who invented the Darwin Awards and has a website dedicated to them, has been compiling the award-winning accounts in annual collections.
The stories are divided into six classifications: "Law Enforcement: Crime Does Pay," "Men: Omega Male," "Explosions: Short Sharp Shock," "Women: Female Finale," "Technology: Deus Ex Machina," and "Disqualified: Glory Days Gone." The latter chapter consists of stories that were ultimately disqualified from consideration for a Darwin Award but are nonetheless amusing in their own right.
As with any story, a great deal of the entertainment is in the telling, and Northcutt has the perfect literary voice for relating these tales of people who get run over by trains while listening for them or the jet ski bandits who are non-recidivists forevermore.

Loosely based on Darwin's theory of natural selection, the idea behind the Darwin Awards is that a person can be so stupid that it would be detrimental to the human race for their genes to survive.
What sets the Darwin Awards apart from other apparently similar books of urban myths is the care taken by Northcutt to verify the stories which are then classified as "confirmed" (by reputable newspaper articles, or confirmed TV reports), "unconfirmed" and "urban myths".
On top of this, the book draws on surveys carried out on the Web site to provide a glimpse into the thoughts of those who use it, strengthening the air that this is more than just fun, it is light-hearted research into the way people think.

Book Review: The Darwin Awards by Wendy Northcutt
As compiler Wendy Northcutt describes, the awards "commend those individuals who ensure the long-term survival of our species by removing themselves from the gene pool in a sublimely idiotic fashion."
In the section "Macho Men," Northcutt says that some men have what she calls the explosive stupidity gene that prompts them to act macho and blow things up, inadvertently hurting themselves.
In a section on animals she says, "What's dumb for a human is not dumb for a dog.
