Harry Potter vs. Gandalf: Magic in J.K. Rowling, Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
No one worries that exposure to Gandalf or Glinda the Good Witch may leave children vulnernable to harmful spiritual influences, or foster an unhealthy attraction to the idea of magic or of elite gnostic wisdom.
Some of this, as I mentioned above, is doubtless good cultural background; children ought to be familiar, for instance, with the historical concept of the “philosopher’s stone” (vulgarized by cynical American editors as a “sorcerer’s stone”).
Indeed, for such a child — not to mention his or her parents — the redemptive themes in Harry Potter of good vs. evil, of loyalty and courage, of the evils of bigotry and oppression, and of course the wildly imaginative effects of Rowling’s magical world may be fondly remembered for years to come.

Historian Norman Cohn debunks the pseudo-scholarship of Margaret Murray who is the principal source for those "neopagan" claims, noting that Murray selectively quoted from her sources, citing those passages tending to support her thesis, while ignoring or deleting intervening sentences that invalidate her claims.
Witches and Neighbors: The Social and Cultural Context of European Witchcraft (Viking, 1996), Oxford professor Robin Briggs writes, "Historical European witchcraft is quite simply a fiction, in the sense that there is no evidence that witches existed, still less that they celebrated fl masses or worshiped strange gods...
