The sunny Wengernalp, with its fascinating terraced steps, is situated directly opposite the northern glacial walls of the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
It was undoubtedly the continued and awakening interest for the Alps during the 18th century, that led the Wengernalp to its world-famous standing today.
The longstanding family-run hotel and mountain dwelling, stemming from the 19th century, was lovingly restored and modernised in several stages, and by today’s standards is considered one of the most charming hotels in the Alps.

The Wengernalp Railway is an 800 mm gauge rack and pinion railway (Riggenbach-Pauli system) and is the longest cog - wheel railway in Switzerland.
It runs from Lauterbrunnen to the head of the Kleine Scheidegg pass where it connects to the Jungfrau Railway.
The line was opened in 1893 and electrified in 1909/10 using 1500 V direct current.

The two branches are connected by the Wengernalp Bahn.
The Wengernalp Bahn is a 19-kilometer line from Lauterbunnen to Grindelwald, leading over the Eiger ridge at the junction station of Kleine Scheidegg.
In the winter, this junction is a ski resort served by many lifts and trails, as well as the rail line.

 Short History
Around 1350 monks from the monastery in Interlaken succeeded in extending their sphere of influence as far as Wengen and Wengernalp and eventually the whole Lauterbrunnen valley fell into their hands.
In 1487 a church was established in Lauterbrunnen and adorned with a bell that was ordered from their old home of Gsteig, which can still be seen in front of the newer church here today.
The last decade of the 19th century witnessed the opening of a number of railways in the Jungfrau region including the BOB - Bernese Oberland Railway - from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, and the Wengernalp, Schynige Platte and Murren Railways.

 Hiking in Switzerland - Around Wengen
A little farther up is a lookout point off to the right, from where there are good views back towards Wengen and the valley, as well as up towards the Jungfrau and Mönch.
Once at Wengernalp station, you have the choice of continuing up alongside the railway up to Kleine Scheidegg, or the signposted path up to Haaregg, or a couple of routes down to Mettlenalp.
One easy route down from Wengernalp, signposted Mettlenalp, descends gently towards the two chairlift stations at Wixi, where you may spot (and hear) rumbling snowfalls on the mountain flanks opposite.

Plans for this project were maturing as early as 1875 but were shelved for financial reasons.
In 1890, after two part-projects were withdrawn and the third modified, the authorities granted the concession to build the railway from Lauterbrunnen over Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald.
The Wengernalp Railway was the first to travel up into the high mountains and construction was to prove anything but child's play.

A keen observer, Guyer-Zeller also noted the extreme popularity of the little Wengernalp line that served to carry passengers in a toylike train of one or two carriages up from Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg lying at 6, 700 odd feet above sea level.
If this plan were adopted the builders would have only some nine thousand feet of track to lay before they arrived at the summit of the Jungfrau.
The Swiss Government then gave the enterprise its official sanction, and primary operations began with a supply base at Lauterbrunnen, from where the material had to be conveyed to Kleine Scheidegg over the Wengernalp line.

Just before you get to the stream of the same name, you'll see a yellow trail marker for Wengernalp pointing you off to the right, through a barnyard.
For anyone who is, for example, tired from this thousand meter climb, there is the possibility of taking the train from Wengernalp.
But I would recommend going on by foot to Wengen, since it's all downhill from there, anyway.
