Wentworth, born in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1811, arrived in Lexington during its heyday in 1841 and soon became one of the town's leading citizens.
Wentworth's enrollment again reached record heights during the Vietnam conflict in the 1960's, but in the early 1970's the backlash against the military caused enrollment to drop precipitously.
Wentworth as Superintendent in 1973, and Mac was able to help him stabilize the Academy while many similar institutions closed their doors throughout the country.

Wentworth graduated from the Chandler Scientific Department of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1887 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
