Werewolf (Middle-earth) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Middle-earth werewolves were not shapeshifters like the werewolves of European mythology — they were always in the form of beasts.
The first werewolf was Draugluin, and the greatest werewolf was Carcharoth, the guardian of Angband, a descendant of Draugluin as all other werewolves were.
The name werewolf appears to have been chosen because they were in essence sentient (but evil), and thus had a status beyond that of normal wolves.

 Lounge
This recognizes that the human body and the earth are the same, and that to engage the life processes in one is to engage those in the other.
Contrary to the conventional Christian understanding that the earth is some kind of lounge where we wait until we are granted entry to a paradisiacal afterlife, this view sees the earth as itself paradise, though still embryonic of what it can be.
To honor the body is to honor the earth, for it is thru the medium of the body that the land births spiritual traditions, ways to best relate to it.

If you do meet eyes or survive an attack of a werewolf, and if you tell no one of the incident for one year and one day, you may be freed from the spell as well as free the spirit of the attacker.
In many cases, if the werewolf is injured, it is transformed back to human form revealing its identity.
Like the legendary vampire, the werewolf can bite and drink the blood of its victim as well as devour his flesh.

 "Of Beren and Lúthien"
Beren became in all things like a werewolf to look upon, save that in his eyes there shone a spirit grim indeed but clean; and horror was in his glance as he saw upon his flank a bat-like creature clinging with creased wings.
Therefore he took upon himself the form of a werewolf, and made himself the mightiest that had yet walked the world; and he came forth to win the passage of the bridge.
From time to time they saw two eyes kindled in the dark, and a werewolf devoured one of the companions; but none betrayed their lord.

gaur "werewolf" > i ngaur "the werewolf" (cf.
en·Êl, not ** en·El, for "of the Star".) An attested example of a primitive nasal being restored is * gaurhoth "werewolf-host" > i ngaurhoth *"the werewolf-host" in Gandalf's fire-spell (the normal form gaur "werewolf" is mentioned in the Silmarillion Appendix).
It may be that the genitival article en, e "of the" does not cause the vowel to become short; cf.

Tolkien's Middle-earth: Lesson Plans, Unit Four - Handouts - How Beren Fulfilled His Vow
Approaching Angband, the lovers are denied entry by Drauglin's offspring, the immense werewolf Carcharoth, but Lúthien causes the guard to fall into a sleep, allowing her and Beren to enter Morgoth's stronghold.
In the most significant such episode, the werewolf Carcharoth clamps his jaws around the hand in which Beren holds the Silmaril, biting it off at the wrist.
Beren and Lúthien went through the Gate, and down the labyrinthine stairs; and together wrought the greatest deed that has been dared by Elves or Men.

They brought forth Biological Life, living things which had no spirits, were not kindled with the Flame Imperishable (except in that they were made from the stuff of Ea, and therefore possessed some aspect of the living fire which dwelt at the heart of the world).

The entire kingdom of Númenor (Tolkien’s version of Atlantis) disappeared under the sea; the Undying Lands of the Elves were set forever beyond the reach of mortal Men; and the flat world of Arda became the circular earth which we know today.
