Arber, 49, first postulated the existence of restriction enzymes in the early 1960s while studying viruses that invade bacteria.
Arber theorized that the bacterium produced a "restriction" enzyme that cut the viral DNA into smaller pieces (the host bacterium's DNA is protected from its own chemical scissors by other enzymes).
Arber's theories were verified by Smith, 47, a former naval medical officer and member of the U.S. Public Health Service who turned to genetic research.

It was Caporale who, with Nobel laureate Werner Arber, pulled together an auspicious conference—“Molecular Strategies in Biological Evolution”—at New York’s Rockefeller University in 1998.
There she spurred on the rumpled academic ranks now clearing a path for the view that genomes, like the rest of life, are dynamic systems.
As one writer observed, in an obituary for her in 1992, “Standard theories are still framed in terms of independent genetic units, whereas McClintock thought of the genome as a complex unified system exquisitely integrated into the cell and the organism.” It wasn’t until 1983 that she was belatedly awarded her Nobel Prize.
