  City Garage Theatre: The Presidents
Schwab playfully, and with deadpan innocence, invites us into the world of these three, seemingly harmless eccentrics but we rapidly become aware that we've seen this play before in the realities of twentieth century history: the mid-century fascist bloodbath, the seventy year agony of Soviet communism, the chest-beating, self-righteous monomania of a domoniating United States.
Werner Schwab was born on February 4, 1958, in Graz.
Schwab studied for four years at the Vienna Akadamie der Bildenden Künste, met with violent disapproval of his sculptures from perishable material however, and hired himself out as a building worker and woodcutter until, within the shortest possible time, he became the most-produced young dramatist in the German-speaking world.

TRANS Nr. 9: S. Leirvag: Werner Schwab in a Norwegian Context
The Austrian artist and playwright Werner Schwab has been introduced twice in Norwegian theatre: first in Oslo in 1996 with Volksvernichtung oder meine Leber ist sinnlos(1) (translated: People Annihilation or my Liver is Pointless) and last in Bergen in March 2001 with Die Präsidentinnen.
Schwab's own experience of growing up in the Austrian province of Graz, in a basement of most meager conditions, must also have played a significant role in his writing, as well as the act of creating the myth Werner Schwab.
Nietzsche suggests the Greek gaiety or humour that involves the tragic notion: a life on the surface with the deepest insight in the cruelty of existence.

The particularity of Schwab’s literature consists of the fact that it is born out of words, it lives and is formulated through words.
Schwab’s dramaturgy is a brutal gesture, as if someone would grab you and force you to look into the mirror and tear off your skin, so that you can see your real self.
Sorin Militaru’s staging of the Austrian playwright Werner Schwab’s “People Annihilation or My Liver Is Pointless” got without any difficulties over the huge difficulties generated by the violence of the text (at the level of both the language and the action) and had good impact on the audience and critics, as well.

Austrian satirist Werner Schweb was a boyhood alcoholic, who pretended his father was a slave on a Nazi stud farm and drank himself to death in his mid-thirties.
His life story would make a far better play than the two dozen surrealist pieces pricking the sensibilities of his nation’s middle-class population that he knocked out in as many months in the eighties.
Unfortunately, it has also decided to layer this simple, if fantastical, tale of three ageing suburbanites watching the Pope on their fuzzy television set and sharing their increasingly scatological thoughts on life and love with a difficult to discern double meaning about reality TV.

Contemporary Austrian drama, with writers like Peter Handke, Werner Schwab, Elfride Jelinek and Thomas Bernhard, has continued the themes, with provocation, scorn and savage criticism leveled not only at history, but also at the present world, contaminated, cruel and devoid of principle.
Lupa can be nearly inhuman in penetrating the darkest areas of man's interior (as in Bernhard's Kalkwerk or Siblings and Broch's Sleepwalkers), but his agonizing desire to know human nature fascinates with its consistent perceptiveness.
In the fashion for Austria is also Werner Schwab's My Liver Is Devoid of Sense, or the Extermination of the People, directed by Anna Augustynowicz at Szczecin's Współczesny Theater.

Fate, therefore, decreed that Letts seek out and direct a play by the late Austrian satirist Werner Schwab (he drank himself to death Jan. 1, 1994, when he was 35) called "People Annihilation, or My Liver Is Senseless," now at Trap Door Theatre.
All of Schwab's characters wrestle with comically tortured and high-flown verbiage that never quite comes off.
The best of the cast is Nicole Wiesner, who gives the mother both a highly stylized physical presence — she squints through much of the play, and shows off her living room furniture like Carol Merrill — and a ripple of pained awareness.

Schwab died at the age of 36, before the critical world had become accustomed to his provocative style and cynical attitude towards the suburban provincial Austria he satirized.
