The name Werribee (originally spelt "Wearibi") is thought to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning either "swimming place" or "backbone", the latter perhaps referring to the river's snake like bends.
Prospecting and timber cutting occurred on a small scale during the 1930's depression and a water race was built in 1928 to carry water to Bacchus Marsh.
Werribee Gorge State Park is about 8 km west of Bacchus Marsh and can be approached by two routes.

Geological features, spectacular views, native flora and fauna and opportunities for bushwalking and rock climbing are some of the attractions of the 564 ha Werribee Gorge State Park, about 65 km west of Melbourne.
By the 1880s several geological surveys had been carried out in the Gorge, and its geological importance was appreciated.
In 1907, it was reserved under the Land Act as a public park and for the preservation of geological features.

Located on the edge of a scenic and fertile valley, it is surrounded by hills and situated by the Werribee and Lerderderg Rivers at an elevation of 105 metres.
It is one of the state's oldest surviving domiciles of substance.
Werribee Gorge State Park (443 ha), 8 km west of Bacchus Marsh, is centred on a quite remarkable steep-sided gorge which reveals a great deal about the area's geological history (a sea bed covered by glacial debris then lava), making it a popular destination for school excursions.

Werribee Gorge, and the nearby Lerderderg Gorge are the result of uplifting along the Rowsley Fault about one million years ago and the subsequent down cutting action of the rivers.
The name "Werribee", originally spelt "Wearibi" is an aboriginal word believed to mean either "swimming place" or "backbone", the latter possibly referring to the deep incised meanders of the river, seen as a snake’s twisting body.
The track along the riverbank in the upper part of the gorge is, in parts, a scramble over rocks; at one point, aided by a steel cable which has been fixed on to the rock face to assist negotiate a rock outcrop which would otherwise be difficult to negotiate.

Establishing additional park areas, particularly in the Central Highlands, also reflects the government's ongoing commitment to implementing the national forest policy, in particular with respect to establishing a comprehensive, adequate and representative network of dedicated and secure reserves for forests.
The park is based largely on the Ash Ranges National Park proposed by the LCC with the addition of the Maroondah and Upper Yarra reservoir areas and Dom Dom Saddle.
There are many significant features in the park outside the closed catchments which are easily accessible and which will enable visitors to experience the scenic tall mountain forests, fern gullies and rainforests which are characteristic of the park.

I was fortunate enough to study the breeding of peregrine falcons in the cliffs at Werribee Gorge.
Being the first ranger in a new park gave me plenty of scope to manage the area as well as being subject to dissatisfaction towards the park from a fairly large part of the local community.
It was interesting to see how over the next 10 years or so that opinion about the park changed and that some of the strongest opponents changed their views and could see some good in the park.

Werribee is a very popular crag and as such access needs to be dealt with immediately.
Parks Vic Office is located on the corners of Main St (yes it's the main drag) and Lord St on the Melbourne side of Bacchus Marsh.
I have found that at Werribee Gorge, a lot of the climbs that are given stars tend to have only a few meters of nice climbing, then a loose ramp to the top.

It was a warmish day of 19.5 degrees Celsius (67.1 F) on Wednesday May 14 2003, when on the spur of the moment I decided to do the Werribee Gorge Circuit Walk.
From here the track winds its way to the top of the Gorge and is heart attack material if as unfit as I felt by the time I got to the Western Lookout.
Since I did this walk I have walked over all the tracks marked on the maps within the Werribee Gorge State Park although not all on the one day.

 I2 - The Island - Palaeotopography
'The Island' is a steep, narrow, lava-capped ridge at the junction of the Werribee River and Myrniong Creek - the lava capping the ridge being continuous with the flow from Mount Blackwood.
The old river channel is exposed at several places along the valley sides of the Myrniong Creek and on the Werribee River to the south.
The valley of the Myrniong Creek also exposes sub-basaltic valleys and is of interest for the marked deviation of course and steepening of grade which suggest a history of stream capture.

As usual I checked all the carparks to see who was around and as I was in the only car in the Park it did not take me long to shed the gear.
The walk along the old aqueduct is very open bush and if walked on a day that others were about the walker would be quite visible from either the road or the river-bed.
Since I did this walk I have walked naked over all the tracks marked on the maps within the Werribee Gorge State Park although not all on the one day.

The ONLY time I went hiking was doing a couple of 1hr walks in Tassie, and that's all there is. Climb a couple of steps, pant a little, look and your watch and wonder if the destination is anywhere near, and then marvel at some lookout..
It's a long weekend here in Melbourne, and the highlight of it is bushwalking at the Werribee Gorge State Park, an hour and a half's drive away from the city.
The gorge was pretty, and there was a couple of nice lookouts.

The Werribee River upstream of Melton Reservoir varies from poor to good environmental condition with the best area extending through the Werribee Gorge State Park, with good instream habitat and riparian vegetation.
The lower Werribee and Lerderderg Rivers are in moderate condition with good bank vegetation in sections and usually good instream channel structure.
The majority of the tributaries and minor streams are in poor to very poor condition because of low summer flows and a lack of riparian vegetation The upper reaches of Pyrites and Djerriwarrah Creek are still in excellent condition but are too small to be considered as angling waters.

 Campsites and Caravan Parks in Victoria
On caravan parks for instance you have the option of finding a park by distance, by town, by direction, by alphabetical list - a pure delight to use and it puts the RAA publications to shame, it is just so good.
The same trick is used for State Parks and National Parks.
It is recommended that you contact the park before departure for regulations and current conditions.

The road is sealed all the way, except for the last part, which is gravel.
I enjoyed the walk to GZ and the view of the gorge was great, I am always taken back by this gorge and what lies below.
