Werribee is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
However, its adjacent river was called the Werribee River, and the town's name was later changed to Werribee in 1884, and the shire council at that time was also renamed Werribee in 1909.
The name Werribee is said to come from an Aboriginal word which meant spine or backbone, which described the curve of the Werribee River.

The area of Werribee was first discovered by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824, they had traveled overland from Sydney to explore the Port Philip area.
Werribee, which means backbone, took it name from the aboriginal name of the area.
By the 1890s Werribee had a population of around 500, its large flat expanses of land prompted several market gardeners to flock to the area to set up farms that can still be found around Werribee south today along with the Chirmshine family mansion built around 1870.

The Werribee Irrigation District (WID) is one of Melbourne’s vegetable gardens, located appropriately on Melbourne’s doorstep in the Estuarine flood plain of the Werribee River.
Although the section of the district north of the Maltby By-pass is being subdivided at an increasing rate, the district remains an important source of fresh food for the metropolis and SRW is committed to the long term future of the WID as a viable and essential agricultural infrastructure operation.
The diversion weir on the Werribee River and the main channel of the irrigation district were completed in 1912 and by 1912 a system of channels had been constructed to supply water for domestic and stock purposes to non-irrigated areas within the old estate and for irrigation of some 265 hectares of land.

The government's Werribee Vision involves 165,000 megalitres of Melbourne's sewage and waste water - equivalent to the amount held in the Upper Yarra Reservoir - being reused.
The water, now treated and released in the sea, would be used for the Werribee region's 300 square kilometres of under-used agricultural land, industry, fruit and vegetable production, toilets and gardens in new housing estates, landscaping, parks, golf courses and bird sanctuaries.
A Werribee plant treats sewage from the city's north and west suburbs, while a plant in Carrum takes waste from the south and east.

Werribee Giants Baseball Club was formed in 1983 primarily as a Winter Baseball Club to give players from the VBA Summer Competition somewhere to play in the Winter.  After several years playing in the Geelong Baseball Association the Club decided it was time to step up and joined the Victorian Baseball Association in 1994. 
Werribee is a very progressive club, and from very humble beginnings where the club played on what could best be described as a sheep paddock which had a good diamond on, but no clubrooms etc. progressed to what now rates as an exceptionally good complex.
The main diamond is fully enclosed with lights for training purposes, a double batting cage and a six person bullpen and one of the best scorers' boxes of any club.  Our second diamond is large enough to play two junior games without encroaching on each other.

WERRIBEE has emerged as the probable location for a Baillieu government desalination plant.
The $400 million plant, on 10ha of vacant industrial land, would be powered by thermo-energy, hydropower, a wind farm, or a combination all three, Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu has revealed.
Under the plan, 145 million litres of drinking water a day -- one-tenth of Melbourne's consumption -- would be piped from the plant to the city's western reservoirs.
