	Werrington Online
		Werrington is a large village situated on the North of Peterborough at the edge of the Fens and close to the Lincolnshire border.
		It has superb facilites including three junior schools and a secondary school, a large library, two Post Offices, a wide variety of shops, several Pubs and a large lake with many species of birds.
		The ancient town of Stamford is close by and the World famous Nene Valley Railway is within easy reach.

		"WERRINGTON, a village and parish, on the banks of a rivulet, near the river Tamar and the Bude Canal, two miles N. of Launceston, has 685 souls, and about 5000 acres of land, adjoining Cornwall, and including Yeolmbridge, Druxen, Eggbeer, and other farms, andc.
		The Duke of Bedford is lord of the manor, but the Barton estate belongs to the Duke of Northumberland, who resides occasionally at Werrington House, a neat mansion, with a well-wooded park, which was purchased by his grandfather of the Morice family, who were seated here in the 17th century.
		Werrington is one of a group of parishes for which wills survive in Wiltshire County Record Office.

		WERRINGTON was given by Gytha, mother of Harold, to Tavistock Abbey in 1066-8, and was among the vast estate of monastic lands granted to John, Lord Russell, in 1540.
		At Werrington, as at Castle Hill, the medieval church had to be demolished and rebuilt on a new site, as it stood in the way of the grand scheme.

		During the course of our research for ‘Young Prisoners’ we visited HMYOI Werrington, which only holds children under the age of 18, and thought well of the then regime which, although dormitory based, nevertheless was structured to meet the needs of this very young group of prisoners.
		There are no toilets, and so either PE has to be stopped, and prisoners escorted to a nearby building, or use a chemical toilet, which was erected, outside the building, as a stopgap, which staff report as being wholly inadequate and frequently unusable.
		I have not come across such totally deliberate and unnecessary impoverishment of children anywhere and suspect that, were Werrington to be a Secure Custody Unit in the hands of the Social Services, it would be closed for lack of provision of appropriate facilities.

		Werrington House was built around 1830 for Mr and Mrs Robert Copland Lethbridge on land granted to Mrs Lethbridge as achild (Mary King - daughter of Gov. Philip Gidley King - third Governor of NSW) at South Creek in 1806.
		The Werrington property remained in the Lethbridge family until the late 1970's.
		A small railway called "Parkes Platform" was built at the bottom of the property for Sir Henry's use as he travelled to the city each day to Parliament.
