Werwolf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Werwolf (also Wehrwolf, a less common variation) was a Nazi plan at the end of World War II for a clandestine force which would carry out attacks against the Allies in the Allied-occupied regions of Germany.
The word "Werwolf" is the German cognate of werewolf, in the sense of lycanthropy; it is also a pun on Wehrwolf, which means "defence wolf".
Werwolf agents were supposed to have at their disposal a vast assortment of weapons, from fire-proof coats to silenced Walther pistols.

The Specter of the Werewolf: Lessons from Post-War Germany
Werwolf units were organized in cell structures, and hid caches of weapons and supplies.
Once it became clear that the initial goals of Werwolf were unrealistic, Werewolf was converted first into a terrorist unit, before a semi-successful attempt by Heinrich Himmler and Wilhelm Keitel to dismantle the group during the last few weeks of the war.
Werwolf and other sleeper cells of fanatical Nazis carried out attacks intended to cripple economic infrastructure, slow the post-war reconstruction of Germany and discourage collaboration with Allied occupation forces trying to create a democracy.

 Werwolf!
In retrospect, some commentators have tended to dismiss the Werwolf as something of a Nazi hoax, one whose primary effect was to induce the western Allies to invade Germany on a broad front, rather than go directly for Berlin.
The term "Werwolf" is the equivalent of the English "werewolf," meaning "man-wolf" or "lycanthrope." There is, however, another term, "Wehrwolf," which is pronounced about the same as "Werwolf," but which means "defense wolf." "Wehrwolf" actually has a long association with irregular warfare in Germany.
Werwolf was supposed to mesh into the larger project of establishing an "Alpine Redoubt," a base in Austria and mountainous southern Germany to which conventional forces might retreat.

 The Werewolf Organization
The Werwolf Organization's assassination of the Allied appointed Burgomeister of Aachen, Dr.Franz Oppenhoff in March of 1945, is probably the best known and most widely publicized exploit of this hapless band of politically indoctrinated youngsters who hailed for the most part from the ranks of the Hitlerjugend and the Bund Deutscher Maedel.

Radio Werwolf bragged that "the arm of the National Socialist Party was long and that its agents, the Werwolf, were vigilant, ruthless killers." The radio station broadcast a call to arms claiming itself to be the organization of National Socialist Freedom Fighters.
It's not clear how much support the Werwolf has among the populace, who may be afraid to speak their true minds, given the fearfully overwhelming "Allied" presence in the country.

Werwolf tales have been a favorite of schlock novels, but the reality bore no resemblance to Iraq today.
Werwolf itself was filled not so much by fearsome SS officers but teenagers too young for the front.
They were "no more than frightened, unhappy youths." Few resorted to the suicide pills which they had been given "to escape the strain of interrogation and, above all, the inducement to commit treason." Many, when sent off by their controllers to prepare terrorist acts, had sneaked home.
