Wesley Earl Craven (born August 2, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American film director and writer best known as the creator of many horror films, including the Nightmare on Elm Street feature film series.
Born to devoutly Baptist parents Paul Craven and Caroline Miller, Wes earned an undergraduate degree in writing and psychology from Wheaton College in Illinois, and a masters degree in Writing Seminars from Johns Hopkins University.
Prior to landing his first job in the film industry as a sound editor for a post-production company in New York, Craven briefly taught English at Westminster College and was a humanities professor at Clarkson College.

Wes Craven set out to make a deliberately more cerebral film than recent entries to the franchise - which he regarded as cartoonish and not faithful to his original theme.

Wes Craven was born in Cleveland in 1939.
In 1984 Craven created one of the greatest horror films of all time, his masterpiece "A Nightmare On Elmstreet." It was about supernatural deformed child killer Freddy Krueger (who later on became a pop icon of the 80's) who muders teens in their dreams to get revenge on the parents who torched him.
Craven's next film on the other hand, is probably the most influencial and popualr horror films of the 90s.

Of course, this means that a lot of people have to die, and somewhere along the way her son becomes possessed by the evil man's spirit (or some such nonsense).
Craven has always had a hard time scaring me, and while I can acknowledge the power (if not the greatness) of a LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, or the originality of SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, I have to say that I think his is one of the most undistinguished careers in Hollywood.

So here they are again, with their take on the werewolf movie but there’s a distinct feeling of being there, done that, proving the breed of lycanthrope is no different, it’s just changed cities.
Certainly Craven throws in enough decent laughs, and his trademark style is written all over a quality dream sequence, and the initial run-in with the werewolf, but unfortunately much of the film is haphazard and rather uninspired.
It’s criminal really that Craven and Williamson should turn in such uninteresting work given their portfolios which is what probably taints the movie more than the film itself, since certain expectations are not met, but while the film has its obvious flaws, it’s still entertaining.

However, the genius of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is that it’s played totally straight.
Worse than the child, though, is the character of the doctor (Fran Bennett), who can be seen as an offshoot of the cliché cop from slasher formula who won’t believe the kids and in fact thinks that the kids are causing all the mayhem.
Wes Craven’s New Nightmare takes a unique premise and really tries to go somewhere with it, making its franchise villain scary again while also giving viewers something to think about.
