Wessex Society is a cultural society dedicated to promoting a distinctive regional identity for the Wessex region (click on the button marked "Where is Wessex?", below, for more information on Wessex).
Please note that Wessex Society is in no way affiliated or connected with the Wessex Society of Newfoundland, which seeks to promote cultural contacts between Newfoundland and the West of England.

Wessex was one of the seven major Anglo-Saxon kingdoms (the Heptarchy) that preceded the kingdom of England.

 About Wessex Astronomical Society
The Wessex Astronomical Society (WAS) traces its origins to the amalgamation of the Poole Astronomical Group (PAG) with the Bournemouth Astronomical Society (BAS) in 1970 when the combined membership was around twelve persons!
At that time the regular meeting place of the newly named Wessex Astronomical Society was a school in Lower Parkstone but, after four years and with a membership exceeding forty, new premises had to be found and we were accepted at the Poole College Annexe.
The WAS attracts members from around the Wessex region including Swanage, Weymouth, Dorchester, Yeovil, Salibury, Andover and Portsmouth.
