Wessex Trains originally started trading in 1997 as a rolling stock provider having acquired a rake of Mark 1 coaches.
The train was titled "Master Cutler" by courtesy of Midland Mainline, and used the original locomotive headboard of that name which was very kindly lent by the then Master Cutler.
To concentrate on this project and also acquire further, more suitable rolling stock Wessex Trains decided to cease operations temporarily until these objectives could be achieved.

Wessex was one of the seven major Anglo-Saxon kingdoms (the Heptarchy) that preceded the Kingdom of England.
Wessex expanded its boundaries and clashed with its neighbours, notably Celtic Dumnonia (essentially modern day Devon and Cornwall), which it eventually came to dominate, and with Mercia.
Wessex groups are currently campaigning for boundary revisions to the regions in order to more closely match their definitions of Wessex.

So you might be surprised to learn that Wessex Trains introduced a policy in May 2004 to turn away some of their most loyal customers by refusing to carry bikes for 4 hours per day and also drastically cutting cycle capacity (with a maximum of 2 non-reservable cycle spaces per train) at other times.
