West Cambridge is an area of grand villas set in their own grounds.
Six of the pavilions are, in effect, little scholastic towers made round the Cambridge tradition of the common academic stair (reputedly the source of innumerable serendipitous notions and relationships).
The seventh pavilion is double, and it terminates the complex to the west, containing in the middle the main lecture theatre in which speakers cover vast flboards with (to the lay visitor) utterly incomprehensible hieroglyphics.

Cambridge 1950: West Cambridge   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The 1950 proposals for West Cambridge were particularly radical and of course most of the proposed roads were never built.
Already in 1950 the authors knew that the university was going to develop the West Cambridge site, and many of the proposals reflect this, although even today most of the development has not yet happened (in typical English style).
The basic problems with both routes are the narrow streets and the best way to improve that would be the demolition of the old CUP warehouses (which housed the university pure and applied mathematics departments for many years).

Marriage, Violence and the Nation in the American Literary West - Cambridge University Press
In Marriage, Violence and the Nation in the American Literary West, William R. Handley examines literary interpretations of the western American past.
Handley argues that although recent scholarship provides a narrative of western history that counters the optimistic story of frontier individualism by focusing on the victims of conquest, twentieth-century American fiction tells a different story of intra-ethnic violence, surrounding marriages and families.
Handley explains that once its enemies are gone, imperialism brings violence home in retrospective narratives that allegorize national pasts and futures through intimate relationships.
