NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Michael S. Gardiner
Gardiner's off-field lifestyle has been seen as detrimental to the West Coast playing group, and in February 2006, in the midst of the Ben Cousins booze bus incident, he was dropped to the Western Australian Football League side Claremont indefinitely on grounds of poor performance and poor off-field behaviour.

Chris Judd himself, captain of the West Coast Eagles has commented in his column (though not necessarily in specific reference to Gardiner) that players ought not be role models for children, as the public rarely has an idea of the character of players.

The West Coast Eagles were initially formed when the local West Australian Football League applied in 1986 to enter a West Australian team in the Victorian Football League due to concerns with the constant drain of the league's best players to Victoria.
However, the Eagles rallied with five wins in the last seven weeks of the season, but while it was enough to stave off the wolves, it was not enough to keep John Todd in the role of senior coach, nor allow first year captain Murray Rance to retain the role.
West Coast are also supported by many professional athletes from other sporting codes including WA cricket legend Dennis Lillee (who is a former number 1 ticketholder for the club), Champion Boxer Danny Green and respected Melbourne Cup winner Damien Oliver.

West Coast's admission to the VFL in 1987 coincided with, indeed in a sense heralded, that competition's evolution from a suburban to a national concern.
Accordingly, premierships and honours conferred on teams and individuals prior to 1987 need to be accorded an altogether different level of importance to those awarded since; or, to put it another way, Australian football did not have an official annual champion club until the VFL became a de facto national competition (see footnote 3).

The reason the bald eagle is limited to these mature forests is because the trees must be strong enough to support their nests.
