Croydon is a suburb of London, and is sometimes mentioned as "London's most dynamic Borough".
I guess this is one of the reasons why Croydon Tramlink is sometimes referred to as "a new tram service in London" while when I was there I had the feeling of beeing in a completly different city...
If you arrive to West Croydon by train, what you'll see is the giant loop section of the Tramlink network, where all three routes share the tracks in one direction.

The line was to pass through level agricultural land which was sparsely populated thus allowing the line to be relatively straight though on approach to Wimbledon and West Croydon the line had to go through 45 degrees to follow the alignment of the lines in to the stations.
The Wimbledon and West Croydon railway (WandWCR) was opened on 22nd October 1855 and until mid 1856 was operated by G.P Bidder, who was the engineer of the line, under contract.
With the construction of Croydon ‘A’ power station in 1896 as it became known after the opening of the newer Croydon ‘B’ works was opened to the west of the Purley way, these buildings dwarfed the line for a good ½ mile or so and gave a very ominous industrial atmosphere.

The Croydon Canal opened on 22nd October 1809 and ran from a junction with the Grand Surrey Canal near new Cross Gate to a basin which was situated on a site now occupied by West Croydon station and an adjoining bus station.
The proprietors realised that the coming of the railways was an opportunity not to be missed, and they sold the canal for use as the course of a railway.
Today if you take the stopping train from London Bridge to West Croydon you will follow the route, for much of the way, of the Croydon Canal.
