The Easton Area School District serves the residents of the city itself, along with Forks and Palmer Townships and two smaller non-contiguous communities: the borough of Riegelsville, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania to the south and the village of Martins Creek (In Lower Mt. Bethel Township), Pennsylvania to the north.
During prohibition, Easton earned a reputation for nightlife in an age when the rest of the nation was dry, and Easton was referred to colloquially as "The Little Apple." Easton was a speakeasy town where liquor flowed freely, brothels were common, and the local police were known to turn a blind eye.
Downtown Easton lies at the confluence of the Lehigh and Delaware rivers, and is a low-lying area surrounded by hills to the north, west, and south.

The Somerville and Easton Railroad was chartered February 26, 1847 to continue the line west to Easton, Pennsylvania.
Hostilities at the crossing of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Perth Amboy and Woodbridge Railroad in April 1872 led to an injunction against the PRR interfering with the construction.
The CNJ was formed on February 26, 1847 as a consolidation of the Elizabeth and Somerville Railroad and Somerville and Easton Railroad.
