West End theatre is a popular term for mainstream professional theatre in London, or sometimes more specifically for shows staged in the large theatres of London's "Theatreland".
Along with New York's Broadway Theatre, West End theatre is usually considered to represent the highest level of theatre in the English speaking world.
The longest running musical in West End history was Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, which closed in 2002 after running for 9,000 performances and 21 years, whilst the longest running current musical is Les Misérables with a run of over 8,500 performances and now in its 21st year.

Voting papers are due to be sent to all BECTU members in commercial theatres in the West End, where the union has identified 37 separate workplaces where managers have refused to agree minimum pay rates above the UK Low Pay Unit decency threshold of £7.32 per hour.
Average hourly rates in London's West End theatres are £6.33 per hour, and even after taking account of SOLT's most recent pay offer, would still be below the threshold at £6.54 per hour.
Among the spoof honours handed out by union members outside the Victoria Theatre was the "Phantom of Low Pay" award, given to SOLT for "consistent efforts to pay rates down".

BECTU has submitted a 7% pay claim to the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) on behalf of members in the capital's West End.
In addition to the claim for an across-the-board pay rise, and a minimum 5% employer's contribution to pensions, the union is also calling for its current agreement with SOLT to be updated and modernised, so that members can meet the changing needs of commercial West End theatre.
The claim, endorsed by a meeting of union activists from London theatres, has been tabled well in advance of the October 4 anniversary date, when the existing agreement on terms, conditions, job descriptions, and training, expires.
