The West Germanic dialects can be divided according to tribe (Frisian, Saxon, Franconian, Bavarian and Swabian), and according to the extent of their participation in the High German consonant shift (Low German against High German).
Flemish is the collective term often used for the Dutch dialects spoken in Belgium.
An oddity of West Flemish (and to a lesser extent, East Flemish) is that the pronunciation of the "soft g" sound (the voiced velar fricative) is almost identical to that of the "h" sound (the voiced glottal fricative).

I think the major problem is that the people who speak WF is so integrated with those who speak Dutch that it's easiest to call it a dialect, while we Afrikaans speaking people are at the other side of the 'aardbol'.
I think the question of West Flemish being a dialect or language is more complex than just whether in is a language linguistically, the issue is broader than that.
I believe that if West Flemish start to be used by more people in those districts like Belgium etc it could very well be declared as a language at a later stage.

I can't understand a word of the hardcore west Flemish dialect, I have a teacher who does (he's from Belgium) and he calls himself a bilingual because of it.
This hypothesis implies that all Flemish share a lot of characteristics in their speech, which are not shared with the Dutch.
Whether there would be a 'standard Flemish' instead of the Standard Dutch there is now, Flemish speakers would ALWAYS have to adapt to a norm that is different from how they speak at home.

You have covered most of West Frisia (officially part of the Netherlands) and North Frisia, but you say nothing about Seelterlound/Sealterlân/Saterland, a Frisian speaking area on the German administrative territory.
