  Chapter 22, West Franklin Township
A petition of numerous citizens of Franklin township was filed in the court of quarter sessions of this county, March 17, 1866, praying for a division of their township by a line beginning at a point on Daniel Shaffer's farm, and at the corner between schoolhouses Nos.
West of that Minteer tract, in the unsurveyed territory on the Gapen map, is the inscription "Improved Land." On the other map is a trapezoidal tract "Samuel Clark, 151 1/2 a," which and probably other 100 acres were first improved by William Gallagher, who conveyed 100 acres to Abraham Smith, June 1, 1806, for $100.
It adjoins "Cheshire" and the McDonald, afterward Buffalo Furnace, tract on the west.

 Franklin Township History
Franklin Township was formed on the last Tuesday of October 1785 during the quarterly session of the York County Court.
Perhaps the most well known piece of Franklin Township history is the story of Mary Jemison, who in 1755 was captured in Pleasant Valley by a band of six Shawnee Indians who were disturbed by the encroachment of the white settlers on their land.
In 1800, the population of Franklin Township was 1,023.

The Treaty of Fort McIntosh made it possible for the portion of Franklin Township lying east of the Tuscarawas River to be surveyed in 1800.
Franklin was the site of several early villages: Manchester (the first to be formed, in 1815,) Savannah and Clinton (both 1816,) Orradeen (1835) and Pumroy (1837.) Today, only Manchester and Clinton remain, although Clinton is now an incorporated village, outside of the township’s boundaries.
The Franklin Township Board of Trustees chose to honor the impressive achievements of its native son, the late George H. Sisler, by naming its newly-acquired park, at 800 West Nimisila Road, in his honor.

Franklin Township was created in 1844 from sections of surrounding townships - Elk Creek, McKean and Washington — and was named for the early American statesman, Benjamin Franklin.
Streams that begin in Franklin Township are either tributaries of Elk Creek to the west and north, or Cussewago and French Creek to the south.
Franklin Center remains the largest concentration of buildings and residences, however, the center for government and voting - as well as social events within the township - is a few miles south at the crossroads of Route 98 and New Road where the Township Office and Volunteer Fire Department headquarters are located.

West of it is the Greensburg basin of Pittsburgh coal bed and overlying measures, (4 miles wide by 12 long) and another smaller patch north of New Alexandria.
West of it lies the Waynesburg trough, not deep enough in this county to hold the Pittsburgh bed, except in six hill tops west and north of McLaughlinstown.

Franklin Township received grants of $5,000 and $8,750 over two years from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to take, transcribe and compile digital videotape oral histories from our 70, 80- and 90-year old residents.
With modern surveying methods, Franklin Township was actually determined to be 5.22 miles from east to west and 5.52 miles north to south, consisting of 18441.8 acres.
Franklin Center, or Franklin Corners, as it was called in the post office directory of the time, lies eight miles from Girard, Fairview and McKean, five miles from Sterrettania and 17 miles from Erie.

Leonard N. Lockwood is one of the first settlers in the township of West Fork, and among the earliest residents in the county of Franklin.
He comes of a pioneer race, his parents having been among the first inhabitants of Saratoga Co., N.Y. His maternal grandmother was living in Pennsylvania at the period of the Indian disturbances, and was driven from the State by the redskins, about the time of the massacre at Wyoming.

 Ross Township- Township History
All of the land west of the Allegheny and north of the Oho rivers remained "Indian country", however, until Octobers 23, 1784, when the "Last Purchases" was made from the Indians at Fort Stanwix (Rome, N.Y), comprising all the land from the Allegheny to the western boundary of Pennsylvania.
On the affirmative report of the viewers, the court confirmed the line at the November term of 1809, and the new township was named Ross in honor of James Ross, the eminent attorney of Pittsburgh, just then at the height of his career.
In 1847, the formation of Shaler Township took away about two miles from the eastern side of Ross; so that from that time the township has remained as it is today, except for the formation of the West View Borough in 1905.

Just west of what is now Export, between Turtle Creek to the north and the old Forbes Road to the south, the turnpike continued past a log tollhouse.
The tollhouse had a chimney on the west end of the building that had both an outside and inside fireplace.
Delmont's Central Hotel and the log tollhouse west of Export remain as reminders of the bygone era of the Northern Turnpike and the way of life that went with it.
