The West Gate Bridge is a large cable-stayed bridge in Melbourne, Victoria.
It spans the Yarra River and is a vital link from the city of Melbourne to the industrial suburbs in the west and to Geelong, 80 kilometres south-west.
The West Gate Bridge is was tolled originally but is now toll-free, unlike the recently constructed nearby Bolte Bridge, 2 kilometres to the north-east.

At the memorial park there is a span of the bridge to remind people of the tragedy of the 35 workers that died in the collapsing part of the bridge.
On the other side of the bridge there is a memorial on one of the legs of the bridge that has the names of the people that died when they were building the bridge.

In 1904, Lindenthal, who oversaw the opening of the Williamsburg Bridge and the construction of the ongoing Manhattan Bridge and Queensboro Bridge projects, was chosen as consulting engineer and bridge architect by the Pennsylvania Railroad, which had just acquired the New York Connecting Railroad.
The 1,017-ft bridge is a two-hinged steel arch with a clear span from center to center of skewback hinges of 977.6 ft. Built to accommodate four railroad tracks, it was designed for a total live and dead load of 76,000 lb per lineal foot.
The bridge was erected by cantilevering from each pier the arms held in place by tiebacks.
