The West India Regiment (WIR) was a British colonial infantry regiment.
The WIR was unique amongst units serving in and recruited from the colonies, in that it was an integral part of the British regular army.
The West Indies had long been a peaceful backwater with limited defence requirements and the substitute role under which the WIR had provided a single battalion as part of the garrison in Britain's West African pocessions had become obsolete as local forces were raised and expanded there.

 Trinidad and Tobago Regiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment has its origins the late 19th century, though it was directly spawned from the break-up of the Federation of the West Indies in 1962.
At that time, the two battalions of the West India Regiment were split and came under the control of the main nations formed by the split.
The 1st Battalion became the 1st Battalion, Jamaica Regiment, while the 2nd Battalion was transferred to Trinidad and Tobago to become the 1st Battalion, Trinidad and Tobago Regiment.

The British West Indies Regiment (BWIR) was known as a "coloured" regiment and as such was often the victim of racial discrimination.
The 1st West India Regiment was formed in 1795 in the Windward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean.
An adaptation of this became the full dress uniform of the West India Regiment until the last of regiment was disbanded in 1926 for reasons of economy.

 WIR Uniforms
From their foundation in 1795 the West India Regiments (at this time named Whyte's and Myer's regiments of Foot) were dressed the same as other line regiments in the British army.
The facings of the regiment were reflected in pointed cuffs of the waistcoat and the large tassel which hung from the fez.
As the Band of the West India Regiment, it gave its final performance at a reception at Trafalgar House in Kingston in early 1927, before Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the present Queen Mother).

 South Carolona History
The new South Carolina Regi- ment had a short life as such, however, for in 1795 it was amalgamated with another Regiment to form Whyt's Regiment of Foot, a title which was changed shortly afterwards to The West India Regiment.
Battalion of the new Regiment of a "South Carolina Company." It is not known whether the Founders of the Lodge were members of the Company or whether they were merely Brethren with a nice sense of history.
In 1927 the West India Regiment was disbanded and the Warrant of the Lodge was surrendered to Grand Lodge.

The West India Regiments were raised in 1795 as a fl corps to compliment the European regiments, composed primarily of European officers and non-commissioned officers and fl soldiers, although some did rise to non-commissioned ranks.
Between 1798 and 1806 the army bought 6,376 slaves for the West India Regiments (an estimated 7% of all slaves sold in the British West Indies during this period).
The West Indies Regiment was disbanded in 1927 after having seen action in the West Indies, West Africa and in the USA during the War of 1812.

He was educated at Woolwich Academy, and entered the army in 1806 as a volunteer, obtaining an ensigncy in the 22nd regiment in 1807.
His early service was spent in India, but he exchanged into the 3rd Light Dragoons in order to take part in the Peninsular War, and was present in the retreat from Burgos in 1812.
He was still a substantive captain in the 5th West India regiment, though a lieutenantcolonel by brevet, when he went on half-pay in 1818.

Ideally, these foreign-raised regiments were to be formed of local volunteers, combined with a similar number of bought slaves, under the command of a cadre of white officers and senior non-commissioned officers.
The 6th WIR's Description Book for the period notes "purchased" next to the name of almost every African soldier (who formed 75% of the total force) while none of the African-Americans are noted as being "purchased", suggesting that they were all volunteers.
By the time the 6th WIR was disbanded in 1817, it had served in Belize (1798), Surinam (1803) and in the pivotal capture of Guadeloupe (1810).

It was attended by representatives of the West Indian colonies and its object was to provide a place where representatives of the different Governments could meet and discuss their problems.

At this stage Macquarie had returned from India and was stationed in London, and he became desperate to disguise the true ages of the boys as well as to mislead army officials concerning their real whereabouts.
Hector entered the army as an Ensign in the 86th Regiment on 26 September 1811 and joined his regiment in India in January 1813.
Hector's movements become unclear after this date; however, he joined his regiment at the Cape of Good Hope until 'some flguard conduct' lost him the chance of the command of a company and he retired at his own request as Lieutenant (on half pay) in 4th West India Regiment on 15 March 1827.

The deceased officer was the son of the Rev. Adolphus Frederick Carey, Vicar of Brixham, and was born in 1847.
His first commission in the army was that of ensign in the 3rd West India Regiment, to which he was gazetted in 1865 and three years later he attained his lieutenancy in that corps.
In 1879, Captain Carey accompanied the Prince Imperial on the reconnoisance which proved fatal to the latter, and the conduct of the former on that occasion underwent the scrutiny of a court-martial, the result of which was that his sword was returned to him.

Administrative/Biographical history: The West India Committee was formed in the 18th century by a permanent association of London merchants engaged in the West Indian trade, and absentee owners of West Indian estates who lived in London and its environs.
The West India Committee was instrumental in mounting a strong anti-bounty campaign, as well as seeking alternative markets for West Indian cane sugar in the United States.
In 1977 the West India Committee moved to smaller premises and the Crown Agents arranged for the Library to be housed in ICS instead.

It took two army regiments, the local militia and the use of marines from a British warship allied with Maroon mercenaries to quell the rebellion.
He lead 70 slaves who within 24 hours had managed to kill 57 whites and march on the county seat town of Jerusalem where they were met by a local armed unit and forced to give ground as their ammunition started to give out.
This was the largest rebellion in the British West Indies involving some 20,000 slaves and was lead by Sam Sharpe whose main plan was a 'General Strike' against slavery.

West African Frontier Force First formed in 1900 to administer the regular colonial forces in British West Africa, the West African Frontier Force was composed mainly of African troops and consisted of the Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment; the Gold Coast Regiment; the Royal Sierra Leone Regiment; and the Gambia Regiment.

Samuel Hodge was a West Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
26 years old, and a Private in the 4th West India Regiment, British Army during The Gambia when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 30 June 1866 at Tubabecelong, near the River Gambia, Gambia, at the storming and capture of the stockaded town, Private Hodge and another man, who was afterwards killed, volunteered to hew down the stockade.
