Railways were the first form of mass transportation, and until the invention of the motorcar in the early 20th century had an effective monopoly on land transport.
In France this was Paris–Lyon, in Japan Tokyo–Osaka, and in the USA the proposals are in high density areas.

Boston.com / News / World / Asia / Need to be punctual is mulled in Japan crash
TOKYO -- An obsession with punctuality may have led to Japan's deadliest rail crash in four decades, a morning rush hour derailment yesterday that killed at least 73 people and sent a shudder through this nation that moves millions of commuters by train.
Officials of the West Japan Railway Company said the accident could have been caused by several factors, including rocks on the track.
They calculated that the train would have had to be traveling 82 miles per hour, or almost twice the 43-miles per hour speed limit on that section of track, for its wheels to lift off the line.

Perhaps it slipped the minds of 43 workers at JR West, the operator of the ill-fated train that crashed three weeks ago, when they continued with their plans for a bowling contest even as their colleagues were pulling bodies from the wreckage.
The company employs more than 32,000 people, so it is perhaps understandable that not everyone felt they had to be involved in the rescue effort.
Instead it is the railway staff who are paying the price for a disaster which has shattered public confidence in the system everyone in Japan depends on to get around.

His health compelled his frequent absence from debates, but he was still a power in the house, and his speech against the proposal of the Peacock (q.v.) government that there should be a convention to consider the reform of the Victorian parliament, was largely responsible for it being laid aside.
In 1854 he joined Elder and Company at Adelaide and became a partner in the business which from 1863 was known as Elder Smith and Company.
