	West Kennet Long Barrow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The West Kennet Long Barrow is a Neolithic tomb, situated on a prominent chalk ridge, near Silbury Hill, one-and-a-half miles south of Avebury in Wiltshire.
		The entrance consists of a concave forecourt with a facade made from large slabs of sarsen stones which were placed to seal entry.
		The construction of the West Kennet Long Barrow commenced about 3600 BC, which is some 400 years before the first stage of Stonehenge and it was in use until around 2500 BC.

		Kennet Avenue or West Kennet Avenue is a prehistoric site in the English county of Wiltshire.
		It was an avenue of two parallel lines of stones 25m wide and 2.5km in length which ran between the Neolithic sites of Avebury and The Sanctuary.
		Excavations by Stuart Piggott and Alexander Keiller in the 1930s indicated that around 100 pairs of standing stones had lined the avenue and that they dated to around 2200 BC based on finds of Beaker burials found beneath some of the stones.

	West Kennet Longbarrow
		West Kennet is one of the largest chambered long barrows in Britain and is more than 320 ft long and 8ft high, with a row of large, upright sarsen stones at the left end marking the entrance.
		West Kennet was constructed about 3,600 BC, some 400 years before the first stage of Stonehenge.
		In the past, the mound has been damaged by indiscriminate digging - the first archaeologists were not so delicate in their excavations - but scientific excavations in 1859 and 1955-56 found evidence for a total of 46 burials, ranging from babies to old people of both sexes.

		From Avebury take the minor road that follows the line of the West Kennet Avenue, the B4003, and at the junction with the A4 turn left.
		From the Sanctuary head west on the A4 and you will first come to a parking area to visit West Kennet Longbarrow then one for Silbury Hill.
		It has been calculated that 8.75 million cubic feet of chalk and soil were quarried and carried to form the mound and would have taken 700 men 10 years to build it making it one of the most labour intensive sites in prehistoric Europe.
