Kent has land borders with East Sussex, Surrey and Greater London, and a defined boundary with Essex in the middle of the Thames estuary.
Kent was originally one of the kingdoms of Jutes in England (see Kingdom of Kent), although its name derives from one of the Iron Age tribes of Britain, the Cantiaci.
The ceremonial county of Kent corresponds to the administrative county plus the Medway (or Medway Towns) unitary authority, created in 1998 when the then districts of Gillingham and Rochester were removed from the county.

The story of West Kent Mediation began when a circular from the Department of the Environment was sent to local authorities recommending the provision of mediation to help resolve community disputes.
A Steering Group of volunteers began work, leading to the establishment of the West Kent Independent Mediation Service (known as ‘Wikims’) on 1st November 1995, with the election of a Chairman and Management Committee.
As the result of a successful application to the Community Fund 1n 1999, WKIMS was able to expand its area of operations to cover all of West Kent, thanks to funding from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and Tonbridge and Malling Housing Association, plus support from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council.

The West Kent Parish Gazetteer is based on the much more comprehensive version to be found in West Kent Sources: A Guide to Family and Local History Research in the Diocese of Rochester (3rd edition, 1998), see the Publications List.
Until this date the diocese extended from the River Thames in the north and the Surrey border in the west to Sussex in the south and to a boundary in the east approximating to the River Medway.
The other important recent change was the closure of the Kent Local Studies Library at Springfield (Maidstone) and the transfer of its material to the Kent Archives Office, which was then renamed the Centre for Kentish Studies (CKS).
