 Des Plaines River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From its origin, the Des Plaines flows in a southernly direction primarly through marshland as it crosses into Illinois.
The river eventually turns to the west and enters the woodlands of the Lake County Forest Preserve.
Just west of Joliet, the Des Plaines converges with the Kankakee River to form the Illinois River.

By the third week of the month the great flocks of Canada geese depart Wisconsin for their northerly nesting grounds along the shores of James and Hudson Bay.
These are birds that winter in the tropical rainforests and nest in the forests and grasslands of Wisconsin, surrounding states and Canada.
In most winters some geese remain in east-central Wisconsin, with the population size and distribution depending on open water, snow depth and weather conditions.

The Town of Pacific is located in the western part of Columbia County abutting the southeast corner of the City of Portage with the Wisconsin River as its western boundary.
Wood constructed a plank road from the east side of Portage to the high ground on the west and he charged a toll for those who crossed the low marshland in this manner.
The Old Plank Road was made of heavy oak planks laid in ‘corduroy fashion’ along the Wisconsin River and connected with the Military Road to the east and west.

In the Wisconsin Surface Water map (pdf file), the boundary line between the West and East BRAW bluebirding zones makes it easy to see the profound overall differences in marsh and lakes areas in the West and East Zones.
However, Wisconsin is a big state, and a one-mile square lake might show up as a very tiny mark.
The West zone bluebird fledge was almost double the bluebird fledge of the East Zone.

I do have a photo collection from some work I did with UW last year from Wisconsin and Minnesota, not professional quality but interesting, someday Ill figure out how to share some on here.
We found and identified 2 Northern Harriers, in Marshland / grassland, which were so beautiful, low flying, dramatic white underbelly with distinquing fl markings on.
We also finally figured out what all those hovering raptors are that are everywhere in the farmfields and prairies, Rough-legged Hawks (Buteo), we feel sort of "Duh" now that we realize they are so common in the winters here lol.
