The County of West Midlands is a metropolitan county in western central England, the United Kingdom, formed in 1974.
The West Midlands borders the counties of Warwickshire to the east, Worcestershire to the south, and Staffordshire to the north.
The West Midlands is not entirely urban, a stretch of green belt land, roughly 15 miles across known as the "Meriden Gap" exists, separating the Birmingham conurbation from Coventry, which retains a strongly rural character.

The West Midlands conurbation is the name given to the large conurbation that includes Birmingham, in the English West Midlands.
Occasionally the conurbation is defined as consisting of solely the West Midlands county; however, this includes Coventry, which is separate from the Birmingham urban area, and excludes the parts of the surrounding counties of Staffordshire, and Worcestershire, plus the Warwickshire towns of Water Orton, Coleshill and Curdworth.
Between 1974 and 1986 the entire area was administered by the West Midlands County Council.

Since the M6 Toll road opened in December 2003, it has grown from strength to strength and is recognised to be a key strategic route through the West Midlands.
Midland Expressway competed for and were awarded the concession to run the M6 Toll for 53 years to 2054.
The M6 Toll runs from junction 3a on the M6 and arcs around the north-east of the West Midlands conurbation rejoining the M6 at 11a.

In the west midlands in 1983 unemployment stood at 15 per cent.--in November 1989 it was 5.8 per cent.
It is also interesting to note that the west midlands is lagging behind the rest of the country in terms of its contribution to the growth in GDP experienced since 1981.

M Barnier has been invited by West Midlands MEP Michael Cashman and regional partners to visit locations in the conurbation which are either benefiting under present Funding Programmes or have already benefited from Structural Funding Programmes totalling some £740 million since 1994.
The Programme is being implemented by Advantage West Midlands in partnership with the Government Office for the West Midlands (GOWM) and is aimed at encouraging innovation among West Midlands SMEs.
The West Midlands is already benefiting from two previous Objective 2 programmes; the 1994- 96 programme which saw the region awarded £300 million, and the1 997-99 programme, which saw the region awarded £340 million.

The BNRR is a proposed 27 mile, dual three lane, tolled motorway which would run from the M6 South of the West Midlands conurbation to the M6 North of the conurbation.
The proposals are being promoted by the Highway Agency and Midland Expressway Limited, (a private consortium of Kveaner and Autostrada,) who want to build and operate the toll road for a 53 year concession.
The West Midlands conurbation is so congested that time savings from new roads are minimal and are often eaten up by longer delays in other parts of the system.
