Slightly later references to Norwood as an area of woodland are to be found in the writings of John Aubrey and in Daniel Defoe’s Journal of the Plague Year.
The history of the West Norwood Cemetery begins in the year 1836 during the reign of William IV, when it became apparent that the churchyards of London were becoming overcrowded.
The South Metropolitan Cemetery then came into being amidst the fields of the hamlet of Norwood, in the County of Surrey and the first burial took place on the 12th December 1837 soon after Queen Victoria came to the throne.

At Norwood a unique opportunity to extend the existing cemetery and thus to provide new burial space is presented by the availability of a disused Council depot adjoining the Eastern wall of the cemetery.
In 1965 the cemetery was purchased compulsorily for £6,000 by Lambeth Council.

With the cemetery closed for new burials and there being no prospect of re-using graves until a new law has been passed through Parliament that applies to the unique situation at Norwood, it appears that Lambeth nevertheless still insists that burial space must be available within the borough.
The tombstone, a tall headstone facing the Eastern cemetery path, is fortunately still extant, although it lies in an area scheduled for 'lawn conversion' before we managed to halt this policy in 1991.
At the request of Friends of Nunhead Cemetery, we shall be running a tour of West Norwood Cemetery for a party from their society on Saturday 30 June, starting at the main gate at the earlier time of 14.00 - FOWNC members will also be very welcome to join in.

We went back to West Norwood Cemetery, as last time it started pouring with rain just as we reached the Greek section at the back, which has some of the most spectacular monuments I've ever seen.
West Norwood Cemetery was opened in 1837, the second great London cemetery (5 years after Kensal Green).
I had worked at the cemetery during the spring,summer of 2002, I didn't know that there was a second chapell bombed where the crematorium is now, I totally agree that the rose garden is ugly.
