The region of West New Guinea is the western half of the island of New Guinea or Papua, and has also been known as Irian Jaya or West Papua.
The border with Papua New Guinea is a mix between the artificial border of the 141st meridian, and the natural border of the Fly River.
West Papuan culture was forcibly repressed under the forty years of Indonesian rule since 1963.

West Papua borders the independent nation of Papua New Guinea and forms the western half of the world's second largest island.
West Papua became the twenty-sixth province of Indonesia in 1969 after the so-called "Act of Free Choice", sponsored by the UN, saw the transfer of official administration from The Netherlands, the colonial power, to Indonesia.
The indigenous people of West Papua are of the same ethnic origin as those in the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and are also related ethnically and culturally to other Melanesian peoples of the Pacific.

West Papua remains extremely tense following muted celebrations on 1 December to mark the day in 1961 when a Papuan Council adopted the 'Morning Star' flag as their national emblem amid promises from the Dutch colonial administration of a process leading to a genuine act of self-determination.

Finally I do believe that the Melanesian people of West Papua will be recognised and given the chance to determine their future political status, and given the current turbulent political climate in Indonesia, that time is soon.
