Pearsall, the county seat, is located on the Missouri Pacific Railroad fifty miles southwest of San Antonio and seventy miles east of the United States-Mexican border at Eagle Pass.
The county is in the Nueces River basin and is drained by the Frio and Leona rivers in the west and by San Miguel Creek in the east.
The county terrain of flat to slightly undulating plains is surfaced by deep to moderately deep, light-colored loam and underlain by limestone and calcareous to neutral clayey subsoils.

West, Jr., grandmother of the infant, and sitting on the floor is the baby's mother, Mrs.
West did for the cultural improvement of Texas was the establishing of the J. West Texas Corporation "for charitable, religious, educational, and scientific purposes." It has continued to benefit Texans long after his death.
West recalls that the street was paved with Bois de Arc blocks and when it came a hard rain, which it often did, some of the blocks would buckle up and float in the street.

As in many other Texas towns, one formerly prosperous town (in this case the county seat of Frio Town) abandoned their homes (and courthouse) to move closer to the railroad tracks and a connection with the rest of the world.
In 1914 Pearsall's population had climbed to 2,000 and amenities included several newspapers, stores, and the 500-seat Laurel Opera House.
