HistoryLink Essay: Seattle Neighborhoods: West Seattle -- Thumbnail History
West Seattle -- the oldest and the biggest of Seattle’s neighborhoods -- is both a peninsula and a state of mind.
West Seattle residents decided to take matters into their own hands, and voted (by a margin of 97 to 68) to incorporate as a city of the fourth class.
West Seattle is also a neighborhood that is “particularly marked with mementos of the Indian past” (Furtwangler, 141).
