  West Somerset Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The land was purchased by Somerset County Council, as the route of a potential new road to Watchet and Minehead for the heavy tourist traffic.
The original terminus of the West Somerset Railway, the layout explains some of the odd features of this single platform station, before the line was extended to Minehead in 1874.
The station is the headquarters of the West Somerset Railway.

 The West Somerset Railway: Minehead
The signal box that controlled Dunster West crossing until BR closed the line had to be removed as one of the conditions required to convert the crossing to an "open" type.
To relieve the congestion, Somerset County Council wished to construct a new road from the village of Alcombe to the sea front.
There was a large amount of damage to the railway including salt water in the axle-boxes of the rolling stock and the machine tools in the workshop.

West Somerset District Council, Taunton Deane Borough Council and Somerset County Council have jointly offered local authority grants of £288,000 with the remaining £62,000 to be provided by Railtrack.
After participating in the WSR Spring Steam Gala, the two Castles are booked to doublehead a railour from Taunton to Penzance on Saturday 7 April, returning from Penzance to Taunton on Easter Monday 16 April.
It became redundant on closure of Corby in 1980, and was purchased for use on the WSR in 1981.

 West Somerset Mineral Railway
The line was opened in stages from Watchet on the Somerset coast to Comberow, a hamlet some six miles to the south at the foot of the Brendon Hills.
There was a brief reopening of the mines by a syndicate between 1907 and 1910, using the lower section of the railway, the incline and a yard close to the head of the incline.
The railway was last used between 1912 and 1914, when the Angus system of automatic train control was demonstrated on the line near Watchet.

The Railway Observer reported: “On the 29th October HRH the Duke of Edinburgh started his West of England tour at Minehead, and a special train was provided which was hauled on the branch by 5376 (83D) in beautiful condition, even the brass safety-valve cover having been polished for the occasion.
However, from time to time the Railway receives requests from Train Operating Companies to undertake crew training and stock testing on our line (using the existing connection with the main line network at Norton Fitzwarren), and it is for this reason that the WSR decided to undertake the upgrade.
The Railway is eagerly looking forward to the visit of the 9F and is confident that its return will be more successful than its first visit to West Somerset.

The West Somerset Railway is Britain's longest Heritage Railway and probably the most scenic; it is worked by a variety of preserved steam and diesel locomotives.

The first recorded signalling on the line is dated 22nd February 1875, with the inspection of the signal box at Williton by the Railway Inspectorate.
The WSR added a number of new shunting signals during the 1980s and some of the signals have had their oil lamps replaced with electric lights, an idea that is used on several private railways as well as Railtrack.
All new semaphore signals on the railway have electric lights and as time permits, all the older ones will also be fitted.

Taunton station was opened in 1842, and the first West Somerset Railway trains ran to Watchet on 31st March 1862, with the extension to Minehead opening in 1874.
Bishops Lydeard station is the southern end of the operational part of the line, and is the best place to start if visiting the West Somerset Railway by car.
Originally it had a single platform, and the station building, goods shed, station masters house, road overbridge and nearby railway cottages are from the Broad Gauge era.

Does anyone know of a good site suitable for children (whatever that means) that is within walking access to the West Somerset Railway?
Even better, it should be within walking distance of a beach or horse riding.
There's a site (commercial, mostly fixed units)t Blue Anchor, just behind the sea wall and next to the railway, about 1/4 mile from blue anchor station.
