It is one of a group of villages known as The Stours, located in the River Stour Valley, five miles south of Gillingham.

During September 1988, evaluation trenching in advance of a scheme by Canterbury City Council to establish a riverside walk was undertaken against two river frontages close to and inside the precinct of Greyfriars, established in 1224 and surrendered to the crown in 1538.
Four small trenches, approximately 2m x 2m square were excavated at the proposed bridging points of the branches of the River Stour.
Trench C was excavated against the south side of the northern branch of the Great Stour, south-west of the refectory.

The Stour flowed into the Wantsum Channel which separated the Isle of Thanet from the rest of Kent.

Located about half-way down the side of Stour Hill, there has been a settlement here for many hundreds of years, but today the hamlet consists of approximately 50-60 houses clustered around the only street in the town, Church Street.
The limestone church of St. Mary is located about two-thirds of the way through the village on a prominent little knoll.

The name Papa Stour is Norse, meaning the big island of priests - referring to Celtic missionaries who lived here perhaps as early as the 6th century.
In contrast to the rugged coastline of the west, the sheltered inlets along the north coast, West Voe and Culla Voe, sheltered for 19th century herring curing stations where seasonal workers from all over Shetland (and beyond) once came to gut, salt and pack the herring in barrels for export to Europe.
The hill dyke divides the fertile, sandy soils of the 'inbye' croft land from the moorland of the common grazings to the west.

 River Hymn for Rogationtide
Joining in with the spirit of the Confluence project, the Reverend William Ridding of the four parishes Buckhorn Weston, Kington Magna, Fifehead Magdalen and West Stour based the whole Rogationtide service on the celebration of God's gift of water in creation.
Three weeks beforehand, ten members of the Stour villages gathered together in West Stour village hall in to compose a new hymn especially for this service in a workshop lead by Helen Porter.
The new hymn has been enthusiastically received into the repetoire of the congregation, and new music is continuing to be produced in the Stour villages with the Folk Ballads project run by Helen Porter with Dorset folk musician Tim Laycock.
