Besides Sulawesi's western coast, the search covers the Toraja highlands in the centre of the island and an area south of the North Sulawesi provincial capital of Manado, where the plane was headed when it disappeared from radar screens.

 INDONESIA: Sulawesi Bombs Cloaking Corruption?
JAKARTA, Jun 13 (IPS) - Tension remains high in Central and West Sulawesi, where greedy politicians and rogue Islamic groups -- rather than a revival of sectarian violence or international terrorism -- look to be behind the latest attacks directed against Christian targets in Tentena and Mamasa.
First, Sulawesi's religious leaders have appealed for calm and, to their credit, tension has not exploded into open clashes between the two groups.
On the other hand, Jemaah Islamiyah appears to be focussed on high-profile targets linked to westerners, so it is unlikely that its associates would have taken the trouble to travel to Tentena, a remote town hardly known outside Indonesia prior to the bombing and one lacking a western presence.

Sulawesi was a return visit for me as I had pioneered a birding trip there, with two other friends, in 1987 before there was any gen or field-guide and consequently missed most of the tricky species.
Wallacea should be a high priority destination, as the rampant destruction of forest, especially on Sulawesi, puts it on a par with the Philippines as being amongst the most threatened regions on Earth.
Expecting it to be a Sulawesi species, I chose not to risk a broken limb to get down to it, a decision later regretted as the call was nothing like the possible known species.
